Because a gift is supposed to be about more than just the dollar value of the gift

It's

- i understand and know your likes and interests
- i spent my own time (more valuable than money) to think and purchase this gift
- I'm invested in your happiness and may try to expand your interests/learn new things

My kids get cash and gift cards sometimes, and while they're not disappointed with those, they GREATLY prefer real gifts.

For boys that age:

Nike hoodies (but they have gotten crazy $$$)
Over the ear headphones (Beats)
Carhartt shirt/hoodie/beanie
Those ridiculous slides that look like sharks?

But in this case, OP is referring to the opinions of strangers on the internet, so obviously a thoughtful, personal gift that shows “I understand and know your likes” isn’t in the cards.

Money is much better than anonymous time stamp 09:35’s opinion, no?

I got my 16 year old some Nike Jordans. Those or Dunks are a good gift. AirPods or Beats are also good. He also wanted a chain so I bought him that. When he gets gift cards, I end up "buying" them from him and giving him cash (actually, depositing it in his account as kids that age don't use actual cash - they Venmo or Cash App each other). But if you want to do small gift cards, Chipotle, Chik-Fil-A, 7-11 - all good choices.

I know answers will be crazy and all over the place, but how much do you spend on your 14-16 year old boy? My son's wish list is mostly items that are around $1K. (We are planning on cash that he can put towards these items but he gets frustrated because he doesn't have many ways to earn the rest.)
