I thought Tufts was good, but . . .

Just starting to look as we have a junior DD. I've had both coworkers who have gone to Tufts and friends whose kids go there. They've all acted like Tufts is just a smaller version of Harvard or a bigger version of Williams. But I just read USNWR and it's 40, below BC and Rutgers! I feel like the joke's been on me all these years as I put up with the arrogance.

Threads created just to bash schools are so tiresome.

Tufts was ranked in the high 20s/low 30s for many years. The new US News ranking formula moved a lot of privates downward and publics upward. The quality of Tufts didn't change from 2022 to 2023.

What a bizarre post. Why does it matter if Tufts is below BC? All of these colleges are good. You'd be better off asking your colleagues more about their experiences unless you are a troll. Which you probably are.

My kid may apply, but she will be asking my friends and her friends who are alums and current students.

Tufts used to be the safety school for a kid who wanted to go to school in Boston and couldn’t get into Harvard or BC. For the ones who preferred suburban, Tufts was the safety. For the ones who preferred urban, BU was the safety.

IYKYK. People who know do not post these ridiculous threads - but keep checking your "rankings", OP!

My son’s best friend’s mom went to Tufts and loved it. She really wants her son to go there. It has a good reputation but so do BC, northeastern, BU, Babson, and Brandeis. I would say to come and visit before making up your mind.

disagree. I got into Columbia, Wash U, BU, BC, Rutgers, and NYU in 1989. I did not get into Duke, Tufts, or Tulane (yes, I know an odd mix - I really did not know what I was doing). Back then though we had to use typewriters for all of the separate applications and who knows, I might have had a bunch of spelling mistakes with some and not others.

IMO (and I live in the Boston area now), Tufts, BC, BU, Northeastern, Brandeis, and Babson all have good reputations. Come and visit and see what you and your DC think yourself.

I always thought Holy Cross was a top SLAC - based solely on the arrogance of an asshat cousin growing up who acted like he walked on water. I’m sort of annoyed with myself for assuming he was right.

PP when were you applying to colleges? IME in the early 2000’s, Tufts was more desirable than BC because it would be grouped in with prestigious, culturally-similar SLACs like Williams.

I went to an elite high school close-ish to Boston and pretty much all of my friend group went to ivies, with some Gtown, Duke mixed in. In this environment Tufts was considered second-tier (out of let’s say 4) and totally respectable, while BU was definitely a safety and not too many people matriculated there.

I have never heard of “smaller version of Harvard” though and do think that’s hilarious.

As a graduate of another school that took a tumble in the rankings this year due to the new formula, I in no way think the quality of the school itself slipped.

Um, I just looked and it’s ranked #27 nationally among LACs. Don’t know where it stood previously, but that is respectable. I just think it gets overlooked because of the Five Colleges in the same state with similar student types

Agree. Also went to an elite HS outside of Boston with a lot of Ivy admits.

I am actually shocked people give the USNWR this much consideration. OP, do your own research.

I went to Duke and was accepted to Dartmouth, Amherst and Williams. I was flat out rejected by Tufts. This was in 1995. It has never been any sort of a safety nor easier to get into than BC.

This thread is so odd.
