Dual enrollment classes and GPA calculation

Anonymous
DS is planning to take some DE classes next year but it is my understanding that these will be semester long courses. So if DS takes two dual enrollment classes would they count as two credits for the GPA calculation?

DE is only included on your transcript and factored into the official GPA if you take the DE classes at the appropriate college. I only know JR. At JR, you can only take DE classes at GW if you want them on your transcript and in the GPA. If you take classes at Georgetown, you will receive a Georgetown transcript, but it will not appear on the official DCPS/JR transcript.

If you take the DE at the approved college, then scores count like AP classes. An A would count for 5 points on the GPA. If you take 2 semester-long courses, those would count the same as taking 2 AP courses.

One final point...you can only select courses from an approved set of courses. Again for JR, the GW course list seems most extensive (although it is still a small subset of all classes offered at GW).

OP here: Thanks, PP. And it seems that the list of courses listed in the Dual Credit form is different from the ones in the Dual Enrollment offerings. For instance, the courses on Differential Equations and Intro to Analysis at Howard are listed on the Dual Credit form but not on the list of eligible courses in the Dual Enrollment page.

The DE process is more complicated than it needs to be, especially when you look at how MoCo schools do it and honestly most places.

In DC, you still have to "apply" to GW, whereas in other school districts, once you are approved by the district (almost always just based on GPA), you are free to take classes at the partner college. There is no "faux" application at the college...I use that term because I have never heard of anyone getting rejected for DE.

Also, I don't really understand the college choice with DCPS DE. Each HS should just have a partner college by geography, and that is your option. I don't know why American has such limited offerings for JR, but I would think a discussion between DCPS and American could turn that around. Georgetown has more offerings, but again, classes taken there don't show up on the transcript.

You can get them approved. The McKinley Tech valedictorian took Diff. Eq. at Howard a few years back (I know because the principal mentioned it at graduation). I assume you need to pass a placement exam, though.

Again, you can take a bunch of college classes and they are real classes and the college will give you an actual transcript as proof. The college your kid ultimately attends may also be willing to give your kid credit for that college class (and in this situation, I assume if the kid ended up attending Howard that kid would definitely get credit).

However, only the specific college paired with your school is eligible for DE such that your grade shows up on your official DCPS transcript and it is included in your GPA.

It's a bit silly and most colleges to which your kids applies don't care if it shows up on the DCPS transcript or not as long as you have the college transcript. However, if you care about valedictorian or class rank, then you likely want the grade on the official transcript.

Please check with JR. The DCPS Page in DE is here. The info above is not correct.
