DD 13 is wanting the Snapshot purse. It’s about $325-395 depending on the style of the bag.
Is this too grown up for 13? I’ll admit that I am a bit conflicted, the bag is very sleek in all black. It is popular and likelihood of it being a target for another teen to steal is possible with wearing it to school but I don’t know that this bag would be a target for theft like we are seeing with Canada Goose, Moncler. https://www.marcjacobs.com/default/the-snapshot-dtm/M0014867-001.html |

Nothing about it looks particularly "grown up" to me - at heart it's a pretty basic black crossbody leather bag.
It doesn't seem like a take it to school item (unlike a coat), so that cuts down on theft issue. (And I'd probably veto taking it to school - if that would be a problem for DD then I wouldn't get it.) As to whether to get it more broadly, that's a bigger issue of your budget, your values around a more costly purse for a young teen, etc.. Also, if you do decide to get it, I might think about getting a lightly used one on Poshmark or The Real Real. |
| Just curious OP, what is your net worth and HHI? I'm wondering if I'm too frugal with what I buy for gifts. |
|
YOLO. Gen Zers spend all their money now because there's no future.
Do you want to encourage that, OP? |
^ Do you want to encourage that mentality, OP? |
| No way. It sends a terrible message to your DD to buy her a $300 purse…at 13. Gift or not. |

| Not happening in this famliy |
ha no. seriously?

| I'm 28 and have never spent that much on a bag. I think the most I spent was in my teens, $100. |
| What 13yos take purses to school? Not either of my daughters, nor did I at that age. Maybe in late hs when I drove to school but definitely not at 13! |
| when my daughter was around that age, I spent a little less than that on a purse -- it was a Christmas gift that she requested, and it was to carry her EPI-Pen, which she had to carry with her everywhere. She used it daily for 3 years. For me, giving her some agency around her allergy had value, she really liked it, and, ultimately, given the amount of use, it wasn't that bad of a value. |
| I do not think that is too much to spend on a Christmas gift for a teen, whether a bag or another item. It’s nice, and it’ll make her happy to receive it. What more could you want? |

I'm clearly the wrong person to ask because I wouldn't spend that much on a purse for myself. Affording it is not the issue.
I really want kids to understand money and value. Spending this way won't serve that end. |

Too expensive, yes.
But anyone even contemplating this probably has different values … >shrug<. Whatever, OP. |
