Loaner car is geofenced for DC area

Anonymous
I am having repairs done to my car and had to get a loaner yesterday. My car won't be ready until Tuesday, and I have to travel to Quantico for work tomorrow. I just saw on the window that the car is "geofenced for travel in the DC area. Is Quantico the DC area? The dealer is closed and won't reopen before I leave for work tomorrow. I can't tell you the last time I had a loaner and had no clue that geofencing was a thing. What happens if you leave the "fencing?"

Probably the dealer is alerted.

I'd just go. It's not like the care will come to a stop on 95.

I swear this is what I immediately thought . Again, never heard of this, but I guess it makes sense to prevent mileage abuse.

I have not heard of this either. What does the contract say? My guess is that if you leave the area you either get charged more, your insurance is invalidated if you get in a wreck, or both. The contract should probably also define the DC area. If not, maybe the rental company defines it on the website.

You need to raise hell with the dealer. Your car is not “geofenced.” The loaner is a replacement for your car.

Do you have any paperwork? It probably says if you agreed to stay within some radius but I also concur to just go and deal with it later. The car is not going to lock you out.

I agree. It's weird to confine the owner.

Quantico is generally considered part of the DC metro area.

What a ridiculous limitation.

I’ve had dealer loaner car agreements that said I shouldn’t/ couldn’t put excessive miles on the car, like no more than 250 miles for the the term of the loan or something like that.

I think the penalty was paying some sort of fee.

Except if it’s a Tesla.
