PG Specialty Programs - PSAT 8/9 cut score

Anonymous
I know entrance to Science and Tech programs and Bowie Summit (honors) program uses a score based on gpa and PSAT score. Any idea what the cut score was in recent years? Just trying to gauge what type of score child may need to be competitive for these programs.

Thanks

I think it depends on your school. ERHS is more competitive than Flowers or Oxon Hill.

How did your kid do? Do all public school 8th graders take the test?

My kids are both in Oxon Hill, and they are both very happy. We can't say enough good things about Dr. Woodruff. She is an amazing coordinator.

My oldest son got accepted into Parkdale IB program three years ago, and we really liked the program but we were told that he couldn't attend because we brought our house and moved (it was just a few miles away from the zone)

ERHS is very competitive because it serves a large student population in that area. I've heard that last year's cut score was 2690. Flowers and Oxon Hill are much much easier to get in, but both are just as good as ERHS. I've known families moved to Flowers zooning area after their children got their psat scores (around the 2400's) and got in.

Wow! That’s a very high PSAT score based on the formula and assuming kids had a 4.0 gpa. Would mean scores were around 1250 on PSAT. Does that sound about right? Impressive.

1250 is 99th percentile!

If you do send your kids to ERHS, make sure that they can take the pressure. It's not uncommon that kids drop out of the program because they couldn't take the pressure, and we are talking about kids who were doing very well on their psat and good GPA prior ERHS. You might be a star in your previous school, but not in ERHS. There's also an issue about class size. It's way too big with small classrooms.

What is typical class size?

Wow- I have heard the PSAT to get in was around 1100 not 1250. I may have to rethink our plan.

I think that the ERHS S&T coordinator said is was the 95% percentile on the PSAT.

Also, when they send out the offer letters, you are either accepted, wait-listed or not eligible. The wait list does have some movement so if you are in that situation you can call and see where you are on the list. Duvall usually has openings into August so if that is your backup school you shouldn't feel compelled to take the slot. Parkdale's IB program is similar.

I also know of someone who didn't get in for 9th but reapplied and got in for 10th....he didn't retake the PSAT so I'm guessing the standard is lower for 10th grade entry.
