Yielding to right-turning cars when turning left

Anonymous
I've tried googling this but haven't found an answer. Growing up in Virginia, I was taught to always yield to right-turning cars when turning left. However now that I live in Maryland, I see left turning cars just plow through regardless of how many cars are trying to turn right coming from the opposite direction. What's going on - just terrible selfish drivers or is this not a rule in Maryland?

Left turners are supposed to yield. They're just bad drivers.

I'm in VA and wonder this all the time too. There's a light where I need to turn left, but I do not have a left turn signal. I can't ever make it through the light because of all the right turning cars. People just all start honking and it's a mess. I feel like the left turners should have priority because you can make right turns on red lights, but the left turners have to wait for a green light.

What's going on? Sh!t drivers and no education whatsoever. If you come from another place, we automatically just give you a drivers license. Seems there should be a test.

+1, from a safety standpoint of course you yield to the right turning car (and pedestrians in the cross walk). Some drivers are malignant idiots and don't care though.

I also think a lot of these intersections need to have separate green lights for each side to avoid this issue. There overall seems to be less traffic light timing/coordination going on in this area.

If both sides have green lights, the right-turners have the right of way. However if the left-turners have a green arrow and the right-turner is turning right on red, then the left-turner has the right of way.

You yield to the right-turning cars, of course. Not sure if they don't know (I guess you didn't either) or just don't care. It is super annoying though.

OP here: Yes, I did know this - that's my entire point. It seems that there are many people around me on the roads who don't know this or don't care which made me second guess myself.

If there are multiple lanes both can turn because each car only needs one lane for turning.

Unless you suck and need three lanes to make a right turn.

This. Stick to your lane and you can both go.

This. If the right turners are “turning on red” even if no arrow for left turners, then they need to yield to left turners.

If it’s green light for both: left turners yield.

Red light for right turners, green light for left turners: right turners yield.

Ugh, I hate this. Sometimes I’m making a right into the left lane because I need to be in that lane to make an immediate turn. I shouldn’t have to turn into the right lane and fight my way over to the left lane because some jerk making a left couldn’t wait their turn.

Some of you are just terrible, selfish drivers.

People have just turned into arseholds. Yesterday, a guy didn’t wait his turn at a 4 way stop. Just followed the car in front of him. Sunday, I saw a guy drive on the wrong side of the road to pass a car, left turners just go when people are turning right. People steal from cvs because they think no one gets hurt. It’s sad.
