Hello HS Cross-country Coaches in particular,
A reminder for you as you get your teams ready for the season: When you send your charges out to do their distance training on the shared-use trails, please ask them to run no more than two individuals side-by-side. Multiple clusters of Washington-Liberty kids were running 5-across today as people were trying to bike into work during the morning commute. Yes, it's nice to be able to relax and run your teams through the shared-use trails or on local streets while you take care of other things back at the school. It helps the kids build responsibility as the captains lead their teammates and get well-conditioned for the season. But you, HS Coach, do have to do your part and monitor your students to ensure that they actually conduct themselves responsibly on their runs. I look forward to smoother rides over the next couple of weeks. Thank you! |
| You're putting a lot of faith in the fact that HS XC coaches are on DCUM... |
True. It doesn't have to be the XC coaches themselves though. Could be a parent, an administrator looking to avoid being embarrassed, or some other interested party linked however tangentially to a school. Who knows. |
|
No one is embarassed by high school kids running on trails 3 or 4 across. Get over yourself.
|
Lmaooooooo people on bicycles complaining about slowing down the commute of other people. Gtfo you do it every damn day to drivers. |
|
Your best bet is to say something to the kids when you see it happening. Nothing their coach says is going to change this behavior.
|
+1 I'm not an antibike fanatic but this is pretty funny. Those kids are saving the environment and burning calories by using legs instead of wheels, you lazy biker! The city should be built around walkers, not vehicles!! |
|
Speak to the kids directly, and kindly.
But honestly, this is a problem that will go away in 2 weeks once school starts. So I'd just adjust your commute either earlier or later by a few minutes and you'll miss them entirely. |
| Get a bell and ring it and say - on your left or just nicely say - hey guys I'm trying to pass on my bike on your left |
The idea of a pathelete frantically ringing their bell behind a cross country team is funnier than it should be |
Yes, I am loving the visual image! |

Oh my word. I'm a regular user of this section of the trail, and I have never, ever seen HS kids doing anything other than using the trail responsibly. It makes me happy to see people of all ages enjoying the trail.
On the other hand, I've experienced many near-misses with bikers passing me silently, coming within inches of hitting me. Bikers come through regularly that section at speeds wildly inappropriate for a shared use trail. OP, try this, say "Passing left" or "On your left." The kids are allowed to be out there, too, and they should move if they hear you give a signal. |
This. 100% Unfortunately, anyone on a bike has lost my sympathy and the benefit of the doubt. Bc they almost always end up being a$$holes |
So, your job is so important that you must get there on time, but you assume that teachers/coaches are relaxing and not working? Get a car, take a Uber or share the shared use trail. |
| Its the 2nd week of practices. Give them some grace. Good lord, they could be on devices, causing problems, etc. Instead they are using their last few weeks of summer break to train for a HS sport. |
