So, student took AP Lang this year but is signed up for DE next year - wanted a bit less pressure with a lot of other APs. A little concerned as to how this will play with admissions, but thinks DE grading could be more generous.
But…student has been mulling it over and we watched back to school videos from this past year from a (tough) teacher that teaches both AP and DE. And…the curriculum seemed almost the same, exact same books. Only main difference seemed to be that AP essays are timed writing and DE are take home essays. Is there really a difference? |
| My kid took DE English in 12th gr. Got into UVA ED this year. |
| Is DE at the HS or at the college or online? |
|
I thought that DE was the more sensible choice.
My kid took AP Lit. It was a challenging class. Got ED into W&M this year. |

Did your student get a 4 or 5 on the AP exam? If so, there is no point to taking AP lit because colleges will only award you credit for one of those tests, so if you’re going to use that credit from Lang it doesn’t make sense to take Lit. DE is frankly always the better option than AP in my opinion; it’s 6 credits, runs through an accredited college, and there’s no test at the end that determines whether you get the credit as long as you maintain a 70% or higher. DE is the better choice than AP Lit in any circumstance but especially if your kid already has the score from Lang.

| The only downside to consider when looking at DE: these are college grades that will follow your child for life and will have to be listed and submitted going forward when applying to any college situation including grad school, etc. Make sure your student is going to be successful in them. |
| How does DE work? When do you take the class? |
You take it at school in your regular schedule. The teacher has to be certified to teach DE and the course is accredited through a Virginia college to get credit . You don’t go to the college campus or do anything else with the college itself. |
| The guidance counselor has said AP Lang and DE are the same course so he does NOT recommend DE instead of AP Lit, only instead of AP Lang. |

I know my son's college does not accept college credit that was earned in a HS. here is what they say about it :
Courses must be taken at a regionally accredited post-secondary institution. More specifically, courses must be completed on a college campus taught by college instructors. Early college, early entrance programs, or coursework provided in partnership with a college or university but offered at the high school and taught by high school teachers are not eligible for credit. These high school to college partnership programs include Running Start, ECE, EEP, SUPA, SUNY UHS, and others. Additional courses that are not transferable include pre-calculus, non-calculus based physics, computer courses in BASIC. Online coursework is also typically not eligible. Also, non-credit CEU courses, adult enrichment or refresher course, and CLEP examinations are not recognized for transfer credit. |
Yes, I’ve read similar language at a highly selective colleges. The classes be taught on community college campus, by college professor with other college students for credit. Public universities seem to accept DE credit at high schools though. |

Well, DS was told it’s too late to switch to DE. Initially registered for AP. He did take AP lang and doesn’t have the test score yet.
Leaning towards staying in AP for now although he’d rather drop to honors and not have the stress (5 other APs) but worried colleges will see it as a red flag (not a stem applicant) |

Just adding this b/c the previous posters seem to be unaware of this...
"Dual Enrollment" (DE) is a term that also includes a kid taking courses at NOVA outside of the high school. More specifically, it is called "independent dual enrollement" and you can choose whether you want to have HS credit for it, or not. You pay for the class yourself. Like all college classes, if things are not going well half way into the course, you can choose to withdraw from the class without a grade (no refund). |
It depends on the school. Schools may give credit as long as a student gets a certain grade but the course doesn’t get factored into their gpa since there is no grade given by the school accepting the credit. |
Yes, but if the kid is registering thru their high school it is likely a high school based DE class. |
