Verizon Fios: Should I accept Verizon's offer of a free Wi-Fi router upgrade? (if it isn't broke . . ..)

I've had my old Verizon Fios model G1100 router (the black rectangle) for so many years they're offering to send me the latest one for free -- model G3100 (the round white one). The old one works fine. Hate to open a can of worms by making changes I don't need. But what could go wrong? LOL.

We recently did this and the internet is faster. The transition was very easy. I think this is a low-risk upgrade.

You should actually never use a verizon router if you actually care about speed. They are terrible. But if you never noticed a problem then it means you are used to the internet being slow and I guess then it's fine

+1. We use the fios router for TV but disabled the router and are using google nest points for internet - and the coverage is way better.

I'm using the stock Verizon Fios (new/white) router. How best to measure router speed and determine if I need something else?

From laptop I tried pinging google (via command line) and get an average of 14ms (max was 16.8).

Speedtest.net gives me a bit roughly 300Mbps down and 150Mbps up... with ping 6ms, jitter 1ms, and 0% loss.

Are these good numbers? If not, which metric should I be looking to improve, and what router would you recommend?

We went through this exact upgrade in 2020 (voluntarily, thinking it would solve our speed problem) and the issue we had was that the wiring in the house was the same age as the old router (so, very old). Long story short and many calls and service visits later, they had to do a full replacement of all of the cabling in the house. I'd recommend getting their service plan that covers interior repairs before you make the change.

If you already have a Verizon router, absolutely take the free upgrade.

The free upgrade made my speed slower and according to Verizon, the only way to improve the speed is to pay for an upgrade. I had no problems before and the wifi easily reached outside in my yard, now I have to be within one room of the router. I would suggest you keep the original. I wish I did.

We got a mandatory free upgrade in January. Our router was over 10 years old lol.
The network name and password changes so you have to change it for all your devices, printers, etc. we have TV too and it's a much better picture but the controller and on screen user interface are horrible.

Does Verizon still charge a monthly fee for using their router?

We use our own router on Verizon. It paid for itself rather quickly.

Are you paying a monthly fee for a router OP? I have an Ethernet cable that snakes into the house from the box outside, my router is Google and works fine (though we are on an old plan $40 for 100MBs so it’s kinda slow, but works for all the streaming and remote work we do — I assume downloading movies would be faster but that’s only something we do when traveling).

I would refuse new modem and cancel that part of your plan and just buy a router. Unless I’m missing something and it’s actually a FIOS modem that you need to present an Ethernet cable?
