DCPS April Break

Anonymous
Why is April break so late? FPCS and MD all break Easter week which is traditionally when DCPS has had spring break. It’s a real paint one out of synch with the rest of schools. Plus we have this unnecessary February break. I’d much rather have our kids out of school a week earlier.

I don't mind because flights are cheaper that week specifically because it's not "Easter Break."

DCPS now syncs spring break with Emancipation Day, which is April 16th

DCPS announced a few years ago that they will synch Spring break with Emancipation day. It just so happens that the last few years this also aligned with Easter week. This year it does not. Next year Easter is in March and DCPS Spring break will not align with it - but it will align with Emancipation Day.

AND DCPS in its infinite wisdom has the last day of school next year as Monday - June 17th. Yes - you read that correctly.

This really makes no sense but then again I guess it does make sense that DCPS doesn’t follow a logical schedule.

If ever you wanted evidence that DCPS is primarily in the business of bureaucratic box checking and not education, her it is.

It's always the week ending with the 3rd Friday in April. When April 16th is on a Saturday (like 2022) it's the week before (earliest days April 11-15), when it's on a Sunday (like 2023) it's the week after (latest days April 17-21). Most years the spring break 8 weeks after President's Day except when President's Day is February 21 and Emancipation Day falls on a Saturday. Although 2028 would appear to be the next such year it's a leap year pushing Emancipation Day back to Sunday so the distance will be 8 weeks apart until 2033. The next February 20 President's Day isn't until 2034.

My kid's school doesn't want the kids coming to the end of the school year, the teacher actually told the kids they didn't need to be there the last two days. So ending on a Monday makes perfect sense in that regard.

I love the February break

They are probably leaving room to add snow days. Seems crazy to think about this year, but it happens.

No, DCPS doesn’t build in snow days, they add them to the end of the year. I think it got too confusing to say this is the last day IF we don’t get any snow.

Isn't Monday June 17th a holiday (juneteenth)?
