NCS, Holton, Potomac and Sidwell - any shot?

Which one of these does my daughter have the best shot at coming from private in VA for 9th grade? Not a URM, no “hook”, straight As, moderate sports, probably good teacher recs. Or does she have no chance??

Coming from private she probably has a good chance based on opinions here!

Dumb thread. Of course, if you apply, your kid has better than a zero chance.

She may not get into all of them just because it is a bit of a numbers game at these competitive schools, but as you describe her, I'd be surprised if she didn't get into a least one.

Apply to several. They all have a different feel. Attend the open houses as a family and then drop your daughter off for a shadow day. After that she will know which one/s she wants to attend. Then wrap up the applications. Good luck.

OP here. These are the school she applied to. She’s a sensitive kid, so expects the worst, but maybe secretly a little hopeful to get into at least one.

Mine went to Holton + came from a tiny school. She did not get into NCS + was W/L at Sidwell. Went to HYP. Millionaire by age 28. f you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Good luck! By the way, she got off W/L a Holton to get in. Was also accepted at GDS.

Private K-8? That is a hook and hopefully you were steered to apply to a reasonable list of schools.

At our MD K-8, a very high number got into their first choice (and your list was well represented) and the rest their second choice.

Potomac. Maybe Holton.

Everything depends on the rest of the applicant pool

Potomac is by far the easiest to get into.

Holton

If she's applying from a private K-8, they would have told you to add in one less competitive school if they didn't think she could get into one of these. It will all depend on who from her grade is applying to which schools and what hooks they might have--it's a big puzzle that will be worked out between your school and the area schools to generally make sure everyone gets in somewhere.

Exactly. The only way to find out if your “have a shot” is to apply and find out.

Really? From what our consultant has told us, NCS will probably be the hardest and then Sidwell/Potomac followed by Holton. Is this legitimate?
