Grateful for clarification as to why AAP math level II students are not offered IAAT by school?
- I was told by middle school AAP staffer the AAP-level should not matter (‘he just needs to be in any level math aap’), but elementary staffer is telling me that my child can’t take it even as he is in AAP level II math…. Do I need to call the county for final clarification? |
| What grade is he in and what grade level math is he taking? |
|
Grade 6.
AAP level II in grade 6. I never inquired what the curriculum covered here, and assumed it will be next grade level. |

This is op… thanks in advance whoever can provide some more info.
My child already works on pre algebra problems but this is not recognized at school… He has adhd and we were more focused on getting right accommodations… Catching up on this confusing differentiation just now… |
| AAP Level II isn't a specific math course. Is he in 6th grade Advanced Math? It's a specific course in FCPS and should be listed that way in his list of classes. Did he take the 6th grade math SOL last year in 5th grade, and will he be taking the 7th grade SOL this year? Only the kids in 6th grade Advanced Math take the IAAT. |

Level II services are different then Advanced Math. LII services are probably some extra worksheets but I would imagine they are not a whole heck of a lot. I am a bit surprised that there is LII after 3rd grade because I can't imagine what it would look like.
Advanced Math kids (this is not Level III or LIV. For whatever reason, FCPS separates the math track from all the other tracks) are advanced a full year in math. Sixth graders in Advanced Math are taking seventh grade math. They take the IAAT to see if they are prepared for Algebra in seventh grade. A child receiving LII math services in math is not taking seventh grade math and is not eligible to take the IAAT. |
| What SOL did they take in 5th grade (you can look it up in parent vue). If it's 6th grade, they should be taking the IAAT and the school made a mistake. If it's 5th grade, they are not eligible for algebra next year and won't take the IAAT this year |

Level 2 math is grade level math with a few extension problems. In order to qualify for algebra in 7th grade, you have to have already completed 7th grade math, because algebra is skipping 8th grade math.
You cannot go from 6th grade math to algebra. That is skipping 2 years of math. Even skipping 1 year is challenging for most kids. Your child can still take algebra in 8th. They can do math 7 honors (8th grade math, skipping 7th) in 7th grade and go straight to algebra 1 in 8th grade, or math 7 in 7th grade and move to algebra in 8th grade (skipping 8th grade math). Both will be challenging but doable. Going from Math 6 to Algebra is impossible for all but a misaligned genius. FCPS names the math courses oddly. I wish instead of "Advanced math 6" it was called "Math 7" and instead of "Math 7 honors" it was called "Math 8". --algebra teacher |
| If he is in Level II math (It is not called AAP II Math) AAP Math is Level IV and they are a FULL year ahead in Math(or more) by 6th grade. Level II typical gets pull outs or class with extensions of more challenging problems or work. If in Level II math your child should take Math 7 Honors ( many kids that are in AAP even take this instead of jumping to Algebra 1) or just the regular Math 7( just depends on how they are doing in their math class). Typically Level II math students are doing 6th grade math with some extensions. 6th grade AAP students are doing 7th grade math/pre Algebra. |
— This is all new to me… this info was never provided by school email or website…. |
I know! Why oh why??? At this point, can I request my child is moved to advanced math 6? The current work (regular math + aap level 2 math the school claims to be providing g) is way too easy for him…. Omg - I feel like I failed him… |
You can request, but it is very unlikely (like a 1% chance) that they will move a 6th grader from Gen Ed math into AAP/Advanced math mid-year. My Gen Ed student is in advanced math only because they completed 6th grade math with an A at the private school they went to during COVID and we are at an AAP center with 4 AAP classes (so there was space). Otherwise, for a Gen Ed student to get into advanced math, they need to have a Pass Advance on the 5th grade math SOL, potentially certain scores on the IReady, etc. You didn't fail your son. 7th grade math honors (i.e., 8th grade math) is open enrollment, so he can skip 7th grade math next year. He won't be able to take algebra in 7th grade, but neither will many of the kids who are currently in advanced 6 grade math. |
Does your teacher send out weekly e-mail? Ours always have and they list what both regular and advanced math are working on. Look through the last few and you'll probably see a pretty big gap between the classes. Moving a kid now would mean they skip the second half of 6th and first half of 7th grade math. That's setting a kid up for failure |
THANKS so much for taking the time to clarify. To the other poster, the teacher emails only provide updates on what gen Ed track is currently working on. Nothing - 0 update ever - about AAP track regardless of level… Thanks again for clarifying posts! Really grateful. |
