Both will be challenging but doable.  Going from Math 6 to Algebra is impossible for all but a misaligned genius.

FCPS names the math courses oddly.  I wish instead of "Advanced math 6" it was called "Math 7" and instead of "Math 7 honors" it was called "Math 8".

You can request, but it is very unlikely (like a 1% chance) that they will move a 6th grader from Gen Ed math into AAP/Advanced math mid-year.  My Gen Ed student is in advanced math only because they completed 6th grade math with an A at the private school they went to during COVID and we are at an AAP center with 4 AAP classes (so there was space).  Otherwise, for a Gen Ed student to get into advanced math, they need to have a Pass Advance on the 5th grade math SOL, potentially certain scores on the IReady, etc.

You didn't fail your son.  7th grade math honors (i.e., 8th grade math) is open enrollment, so he can skip 7th grade math next year.  He won't be able to take algebra in 7th grade, but neither will many of the kids who are currently in advanced 6 grade math. [/quote]
