SUV Haters

Anonymous
So you hate all SUVs or particular kinds?

Do you hate people who drive RAV 4s or CRVs or Pilots? Or is it just reserved for the hummers and suburbans?

I hate them when they're bought as a status symbol! My husband wanted to get me the CRV-we buy Hondas-but I insisted on the Fit. It's only me and my son! I couldn't justify an SUV, even a smaller one, with one child. A co-worker complained how much it cost to fill up her Jeep Commander-she has a husband, one child, and commutes 45 miles each way to work. But she can't afford to drive to work-do I feel sorry for her? No! And I often think of what the world will be like for my son when he gets older...so I feel like I'm doing my part, or at least trying to. My husband can't wait for gas to be over $4 a gallon-he said it'll get a lot of the SUVs off the road because people can't afford to drive them. Then why buy them in the first place?

I only hate them when they nearly side-swipe me or graze my car when they are trying to pull into a compact car only spot. Cannot tell you how many times this has happened. I've never driven one, but it seems like they either attract really rotten drivers, or those driving them don't have a very good sense of how much space they occupy...

OP, your question made me laugh because if I'm honest with myself, I do get a little (strangely) judgemental about the "larger" SUV's. When I see them, something negative usually triggers in my mind - thoughts about wastefullness, obnoxiousnous, etc etc. However, it is really ridiculous especially considering I drive an SUV myself (a Jeep Grand Cherokee). Seriously, there's so little difference that I think I'm just being dumb. To my defense, I do have two little kids, a lot of equipment to haul, and we spend a lot of time in a snowy area in the winter. Is my SUV justified? Still probably not.

I will say that when I see people driving very small or hybrid cars, my instant judgement is to feel proud of them for being so cool and environmentally friendly. We wanted to buy a hybrid for car #2 (the commuting car in the family) but they were way too expensive. Wound up with a small four door instead.

You took the words right out of my mouth! I feel the same way! I drive one and it embarresses me and I tld my husband as soon as the lease is up we are switching to something else. I spend 80+ dollars filling my tank every week. The worst part for me is trying to park - I hate having to negotiate parking lots and forget about underground lots! I hate, hate, hate my SUV. I had a small station wagon before and that was plenty of room for all our stuff. They are stupid. So don't judge everyone you see driving one - there are people like me who realize they made a huge mistake.

I hate all of them. But this ranges from mild distaste for the smaller ones to a visceral loathing for Hummers.
They represent a particular American mentality: it is a dangerous world that is out to get you, and you need to respond by protecting yourself in a huge steel machine; screw the environment, screw the other road users, and screw any child that happens across your path, their head at the height of your bars...
The kind of mentality that gets George W Bush reelected and launched the invasion of Iraq.

I have a suburban and I LOVE it! Sorry that you think because you have a hybrid you feel the need to feel I am obnoxious.

I'm the poster who hates them because they tend to be a status symbol. If you have children, equipment...I can see why having an SUV is more practical! My husband has a Element-I know, the ugliest thing on the road, but it's gas friendly and he also hauls a lot of stuff around. That's our beach week vehicle. My SIL had an Explorer until her children were driving and had their own cars, traded it in for a Civic.

I'm with ya!

those that fit that particular American mentality are people who are likely to vote Republican and are members of the NRA!

Just to clarify, tt is not so much that having a suburban makes you obnoxious, but that having an SUV is a symptom of your underlying obnoxiousness.

I don't know if people in SUVs are the way I perceive them or not. But generally I feel that they drive SUVs to intimidate other people on the road. They sit up high, take up more room and are generally road "bullies". Maybe person in an SUV is perfectly nice human being but it is almost impossible to make eye contact with them when you're trying to make a turn and have been sitting there with your blinker on and nobody is letting you in. So finally some small car will take pity on you and give you a room. Never SUV.

So here's what I think: if you're driving an SUV you should be super nice and gentle road person, otherwise everything you do will be perceived as bullying or road-rage.

The thing is - I am a super nice and very gentle person - I hate driving - but I have to. We have an SUV (which I hope to be rid of soon) in the meantime - I drive very cautiously and non-aggressively. I feel like everyone in this city drives aggressively and full of road rage. No matter what car they are in! I have been honked at and cut off by many a little Prius, BMW, Toyota - whatever.

Here's what I hate:

1. I can't see through them, which makes driving harder. They need more space. It is harder to make left turns safely.

2. They have less pick-up than a regular car, and need more space. This means fewer cars get through every light than used to be the case, and thus contribute to congestion more than cars. I don't have the citation, but this is well documented by transportation engineers.

I make no judgments about the drivers - except those on phones or otherwise not paying attention.

Please tell me you are joking. What a stereotypical statement. I really am speechless.
