Why no MARC or Metro service in Annapolis

Anonymous
As the title says, I feel like having mark or metro service out to Annapolis would be great and allow people living in that area and on the Eastern shore to easily commute into DC

I agree; would be awesome. Not enough people want it to pay for it. You make it sound like it would be pretty easy to do, lol.

It would be absolutely fantastic.
It would also be very expensive and generally isn't a priority for anyone in the two bigger metro areas.

I did hear that one of the original plans for Route 50 actually had a train line alongside of it. That would have been fantastic, and the best time to do it.

As someone who lives in Annapolis, I would love a train to DC.
But if I'm waving my magic wand for intrastructure projects, i would much rather have an additional bay crossing NOT on route 50 so we can divert some of the zillions of people from DC going to the shore.

If we are dreaming up fantasy infrastructure, I wish Elon Musk would have built the Balt-Wash hyper loop. That would’ve been cool.

Yes, it would be great, but the previous governor was only interested in building highways, and federal transportation funding was very, very heavily biased towards highways. Maybe the new governor will get the process started, using the new federal transportation bill, which is somewhat less biased towards highways.

Oh wait, don’t forget about the Mag-Lev. We would have had it too if the transit bros didn’t bog down the project by objecting to the number of parking spaces at the convention center stop. Talk about short sighted NIMBY politics preventing us meeting our long range transit infrastructure goals so that we don’t boop from climate change.

That’s right. The only thing that stopped us from having MARC from DC to Annapolis (which is a natural priority for the state of Maryland) was Governor O’Malley.

If we're dreaming up fantasy infrastructure, I would like to have a flying unicorn. It's equally as real as a tunnel between Baltimore and Washington that magically transports many vehicles with small numbers of passengers, on a road, more efficiently than a single vehicle with multiple cars with many passengers, on rails.

What about flying cars? That’s be cool. No need to spend billions to build a rail line that will then require operating subsidies in the tens of millions per year when we can all just hope for flying cars. Take a flying Uber to Annapolis if you don’t own one yourself.

And as someone who lives in DC I'd love to have a cheap easy way to do day trips out to Annapolis other than driving.

Let's talk about the operating subsidies for Route 50.

I agree, road subsidies are absolutely horrible. We should be subsidizing R&D in teleportation instead. Just consider how revolutionary that will be for transportation.

Because there aren’t railroad tracks or a railroad right of way within 10 miles of Annapolis would be the obvious guess.

You’re limiting the situation to the obvious and real and not the imaginary.

In the imaginary world, the reason there isn’t a train station or RR right of way to Annapolis (one of the oldest cities in America), is because the US has been subsidizing cars since the 1700s. You’re not dreaming big enough either. You should be dreaming for a steam punk future of 19th century technology to solve 21st century transportation needs.
