Hi. Anyone have experience auditioning for Duke Ellington for instrumental music, specifically piano? Also interested in any recent experiences from those who have been accepted and attended.
Thanks! |
There is one audition around February, sheet music is allowed. All the piano students are very high performing, there is a concert at DE next week and you can see some of them perform. 3-4 piano students are admitted in each freshman year, and perhaps 12 audition. The other instruments admit about the same, but I don't know for sure. Your child should be playing ABRSM 8 or above, for piano. My child got in and is very happy. |
Thank you!! This is very helpful. Would you say that a majority of the instrumental students have a pre-professional mindset/goals? I do not think this is DC’s path; trying to gauge student body culture, etc. |

I really could not say. But for sure not all of them are thinking of going to music school but they are still very into their music. I would like to know how many instrumental students are at the level where they could audition for the big music schools by senior year.
Have a look on the Kennedy center web site, one of the DE piano students played there in a Christmas special recently. You will get the idea for piano at least. |
There is a winter concert this week at DE which has all the instruments playing. Check the website. |
| We also have a student looking at DESA for piano next year. Speak to Dr Haewon Min who is the head of piano. They take 2-3 pianists every year so its competitive. We went to a student piano concert in December. They were playing Chopin and Schubert at grade 8 and 9 levels. The piano students are passionate about their music but not necessarily planning on music school. |
