What is your teen paid for babysitting?

Anonymous
My 17 year old wants to start babysitting, but doesn’t know what to charge.

What are your teens paid for babysitting? Not 12 year old mother’s helper stuff, but warming up dinner, putting to bed, regular Saturday night babysitting.

Thank you!

$15/hr is what we pay high school babysitters for 3 elementary age kids.

We pay the same and have three sitters in rotation who jump at the jobs.

20 an hour which seems crazy.

I have several high school babysitters I use at this rate. It isn’t too low. They aren’t going to find a higher paid job anywhere including what is taken out in taxes. And frankly, majority of high school students don’t want the commitment of a real job. Babysitting is easy and low commitment. Good luck getting an employer that hires under 18 and pays over $15 after taxes.

I feel like $15 is totally fine maybe even $12. I would not pay a high school kid $20 an hour. That's crazy.

My sophomore daughter asks for $15 plus extra $1 per kid. People generally end up paying her more though.

My teen is ridiculously overpaid because a lot of parents in our neighborhood are just desperate for sitters. It’s usually over $20 an hour. She doesn’t have a set rate that she asks for - honestly if she did, she would be getting less!

This is untrue.

Examples:
Neighbor’s 14 year old gives soccer lessons to kids for $40/40 min

One of mine tutors math for $30 for $30 min

^^ when my kids were little I thought it was insane that I paid $15/hour for sitters. Now that I have teens and see how busy they are and their options and commitments, they need to be paid more.

- my daughter won’t babysit because it pays less than other options and she has such limited free time she doesn’t want to use it making less money.

My 14 year old gets $15 an hour babysitting and $13 an hour for working at an local camp.
They say that babysitting is a much easier job.
