how much space do you need?

Assuming two parents and one child, how much square footage do you really need? I find most people have a lot of clutter and the more space, the more clutter. What do you think?

I have a 2500 square foot house, and a family of four. Honestly, we only use half the space.

I agree with your sentiment about the more space you have, usually the more stuff you collect. Right now, it's just my husband and I, and our 3 year old. We have about 2400 sq ft and it seems like a lot of space to us. We moved from a very tiny place in DC (We were in the top floor of a row house. Very narrow and SMALL) We don't even use the living room. We have our tv in the basement along with all of our daughters toys, but usually we just hang out in our room. We only use the living room and basement when we have friends over. I would say we could use much less space, but it is nice to have. Especially when you have relatives visiting from out of town. But we do find ourselves saying, "Well, we have the space..." when trying to decide if we want to buy something or not.

We have a small house, one child, a dog, 2 cats and us. Our house is about 2000 sq ft.-but we're not packrats. We have a huge walk up attic, and what our son outgrows, goes straight to the attic. We don't find our home to be constricting, but the layout is good. We are turning half the attic into a master bedroom with a bath though, our bedroom is small. I think it all depends on how much you keep around. I can't live in chaos.

We had two adults, one baby, and two cats in 900 square feet (2 BR, 1 BA rowhouse), and it felt too small -- but that may be b/c I'm not so neat ...
We moved and now have about 2400 square feet and that's definitely more than we need, but it does feel better ...

Two adults, two kids, and two big dogs -- 2000 sq feet. We still have more "stuff" than we need, so I am sure we could get by with smaller storage space (we a good size attic and storage area).

2 adults, one toddler in 1300 square feet and we are claustrophobic!

2 adults and 1 toddler in 1400 ft. townhouse. It works except for a lack of separate office space. I don't know how long it will work if we have a second child.

2 adults, 2 kids (one Kindergarten, one toddler), 2 kittens in approx. 1000 sq. ft.

It's really tight, but I could see how it would be so much more workable if we just had a garage or storage shed for all of the type of "crap" that normally goes in there....all of that stuff is in our house

We have 3 kids and 2 dogs in a 1300 sq ft house and we don't feel cramped. Everyone thinks we're nuts but the house is clean and organized and it works. We had a baby and two adult in a 900 sq ft house and that was fine till the second one came. It all depends on your personal need for space. We lived in the UK for a long time and compared to homes there, our house is huge.

You are my new hero, and I am not being sarcastic. Do you have any organizational tips to share? We have 1 toddler, 2 dogs and 2 adults in the same sized house and feel like things are closing in on us sometimes. But it's more the "stuff" than the people/animals I think.

we are two adults, two kids, two cats in 1400 sq feet. I definitely wish we had more space, but I am actually appreciating that we dont need BIG to be comfortable. I am actually beginning to get peeved with the size of furniture that is available for smaller spaces. I was thrilled to see C&B (or whatever) have a "smaller space" line...there is nothign small about that!!! Living in the smaller space (1940's house, everything is smaller) has definitely taught me to purge more...this has not had an effect on DH, however!

2 adults, one toddler. 1200 sq foot older home. I think we have enough space, but with an older house, it is not laid out well, so a lot of it goes wasted (it's unusable) so it feels much smaller than it is. We have a tiny kitchen, small dining room and living room on the main level. 3 small bedrooms on the top level (one for us, one for baby and one for guests), basement is unfinished so all our remaining junk goes down there.

A smaller home has forced us to declutter and life is SO much better with less things to clean and store. I do wish we had just one more room on the main level that can act as a playroom and hold the baby's toys and an office.
