I'm in a reading rut - too many light-weight thrillers lately - and could use some new ideas!
I typically like literary fiction, but the more accessible kind that crosses over into popular fiction (think Ann Patchett, Jennifer Egan, Dave Eggars, Mohsin Hamid). I've also had good luck these past few years with women-centered novels that go a bit deeper (as opposed to the current glut of thrillers with "Girl," "Woman" and "Wife" in the titles . . . . ) For example, I really liked The Vanishing Half, This Is How It Always Is, Black Cake, The Power, and Such a Fun Age. Thanks! |
My Policeman
The Three Waves of Volunteers and the New Earth
Someone on DCUM recommended Outlawed by Anna North and it is a great women-centered literary fiction dystopian western
A Gentleman in Moscow, thought it is not woman centered.
OP, can you recommend any of those light weight thrillers you read recently?
The Guncle. I loved it, but it’s certainly not woman-centered.
Dead Girls. Off-putting title but really good collection of creative non-fiction.
The Guest List by Lucy Foley was a good little thriller. It’s about a murder at a weekend wedding reception. Set in Ireland.
Emily Giffin “meant to be.” Based on jfk jr and Carolyn bessett.
Guncle is very good! Did you already read These Precious Days from Ann Patchett? That was fantastic. I also am a big Anne Tyler fan and just read French Braid which I enjoyed. We Are the Brennans (family saga), Circe, The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah are all ones I liked too. |
Have you read Sally Rooney first 2 books? The Mothers. Who is Maud Dixon? Tell the Wolves I'm Home.
Girl, Woman, Other
Sort of woman-centered, but a beautiful and thought-provoking read regardless: Happiness by Aminatta Forna

Remarkably Bright Creatures - it's at the soppier end of women's/literary fiction; I really enjoyed it
Sea of Tranquility - it's a very quiet book but I loved it |
