Any point in applying to TJ with a B+

Anonymous
My child just finished 7th with all A and a B+ from a traditional TJ feeder. Do you think there is any chance of getting in?

What’s the harm in applying?

Well if there is no chance to get in, I feel
Like I don’t want my kid wasting the mental energy

Here's the real question, do they get free lunch?

And I do support the boost for poor kids. Answer is no I think if you are not poor. Maybe if you are.

No free lunch

The difference between 'B+' and 'A' in a single subject is tiny in terms of actual points awarded. That difference could be easily made up by a slightly more higher-valued response on SES or essay, so your kid should definitely apply if interested.

The only kids admitted to TJ this year from traditional feeders had a 4.0. And almost all of those kids also had free lunch (or claimed to have it?). A B+ or even an A minus will keep a kid out. It also kept a kid out under the old system btw for the most part. Look at rhe data. Sure, some kids with a A minus were admitted, but it was rare for a kid from a center school to get in without all As.

It’s ridiculous I know.

Is that true about the traditional feeders? Can you please post that data? I want to see the free lunch breakdown by school.

Hmm ok bummer. It was a tough transition after virtual bit I decided better to let the kid struggle rather than try to intervene and micromanage.

You probably shouldn’t let yourself be swayed by people on the internet who claim to have sweeping knowledge (“The only kids…”) that they certainly don’t.

Our child got in from a traditional feeder without free lunch. In fact we don't know anyone who did get in who had free lunch. Can you say sour grapes?
