Graduation Announcements

Is it tacky to send out announcements for a high school graduation? We have several family members that would like to know that he is graduating but a few people have said it’s tacky.

If the family members want to know, just call (or better yet, have the graduate call) and tell them "Hi Aunt Ruth, I graduated from high school last Saturday. The ceremony was nice but really hot out, yeah I'm going to Penn State in the fall. I didn't know Uncle Joe went there! etc."

Yes, it’s tacky because it looks like a gift request. Just tell, text, or post that your kid is graduating. No need to send a formal announcement.

If they are close enough to really care that your kid is graduating, wouldn't they already know? Most kids graduate at 17/18 (depending on which month their birthday is in) so they would know how old your kid is--right?

Sending out graduation announcements is nothing more than a request for money. Do not do it, OP. And truly no one is sitting on pins and needles waiting to hear if your kid is graduating. It’s pretty much a given these days.

Thank you, Sally Quinn. 😂

I'm pretty rigid about etiquette but I will say I've never gotten a birth or graduation announcement and been annoyed. I love seeing peoples' milestones! People are grumps.

I thought graduation announcements were standard. Love seeing the grad pics!

So do you send a gift after receiving them?

Maybe back in the 1950’s they were standard. When high school was generally the end of the kid’s academic career and certainly before the kids and parents had social media pages that announced the event worldwide and immediately!!

It is seen as a money-grab now.

Look on the kid’s social media page to see all the pics you want including graduation picture.

Definitely send the announcement with a picture to family or a nice handwritten note from your child with a picture. Not everyone uses social media these days.

But birth announcements are fun and include pics of the baby, weight, birthdate. Grad announcements are kind of a given.

+100

To those who think they are tacky? toss them. Or gift grabs? Toss them and don't send a thing. Seriously some people are the worst.

Ugh. I hate getting high school graduation announcements! And a hand written note from the graduate that I don’t even know well enough to spot in a crowd? MONEY GRUBBING!

You want the truth, OP? I would resent you for it. It’s 2022
