Hello I am wondering if anyone else is in this situation, or experienced this: my son is in the Montgomery College Early College program (Graduates with HS diploma and 60 college credits). He applied and got accepted to UMD for Spring 2023, and they offered that he enroll in Freshman Connection for Fall 2022, where he can take entry level courses, live on campus, etc. But he already has 60 college credits, so Freshman Connection entry level classes don't make sense for him. He really wants to go to UMD and his only real option is to go somewhere else for Fall 2022 and transfer the credits to UMD in the Spring. If anyone has experience with a similar situation, please let me know. Thank you.
Have you checked to see whether the Freshmen Connection course lists contain classes that are relevant to / required for DC's intended major? You don't need many of them to be worthwhile, just 4-5 of them (in order to qualify for f/t status). If DC is really and truly undecided, knock out some distribution requirements that the EC program didn't check off, or have DC take free electives in an area of interest, passion, or curiosity. There are lots of ways to create a meaningful schedule.
What about not taking classes in the fall? Look for internships or volunteer experiences or something like that to help him career wise? What was your plan for him re: getting the AA as a high school student? Does he want to stay in college for the 4 years? If so he could certainly take the time “off” from classes. Taking classes elsewhere seems not worth it to me if he wants UMD and is in no hurry to graduate.
Is he in the same major as the Early College program? If so, MC and UMD have a transfer agreement. If accepted he would be a junior at UMD. You should contact your MC Early college coordinator. I think transfer applications are around now. Your MC coordinator should be able to help sort things out.
Another option is to take some classes that would help knock out most of the classes needed for a minor in something. That’s what my DS with a bunch of dual enrolled credits is doing. (Not a spring admit though. He just had extra time in his schedule)
For those replying, keep in mind that Freshman Connection offers a very limited supply of freshman classes for one semester, not the full panoply of academic options. OP, I'm also curious if your son would prefer to apply as a transfer and if it is too late for that. UMD likely has a limit on the number of outside credits that can be accepted, so doing one semester elsewhere may not make much sense. I like the ideas about working for one semester or perhaps doing a non-credit semester abroad program before the January start.
Did you ask Admissions why someone who is an incoming junior is being asked to come in as a freshman? UMD Admissions doesn't seem to read applications very carefully.
Early College kids cannot apply as transfer students. They have to apply as freshman because they do not have their high school diploma. They are treated like all other high school seniors, except that they have 60 college credits as part of their applications. Freshman Connection does not make sense for these kids, so hopefully UMD will work with you to find the best solution for your son.
There is no point in going anywhere else for fall since your child will only be able to transfer 60 credits total
Hmm, I’ve never seen this before but imagine it could be the basis for an appeal to admissions as freshman connection isn’t possible for your child.
Does your son have a specific major in mind? Would he really like to graduate in 2 years?
Maybe he could work a job for the fall? Anything, like grocery store or waiting tables, to get some work experience, save some money?

I assume this is bc there is no transfer agreement Granting guaranteed admission. His college credits helped with admission, but the rest isn’t guaranteed. Here is what I’d ask:
Can he enroll in umd classes in the fall as a non degree seeking student? Also, why is he admitted in the spring versus the fall? I have a kid who will have similar stats… |
Bump
Why? OP hasn’t been answering any questions. |
