I have two boys age 10 and 12 who could use improvement in writing.
Could you recommend a summer writing course or camp? We live in McLean. I see that Fairfax Collegiate, AOPS and Landon all have summer writing courses. Does anyone have experience with these? My older child did an online writing and online debate camp with Fairfax Collegiate. It seemed fine. |
| Maybe an IEW course? I used these when I homeschooled my son, and they were pretty good. |
| I've been underwhelmed by Fairfax Collegiate. |

| Anyone have any experience with a summer writing course or camp? |
| Same here. I would prefer in person but haven’t found anything. |
| Same boat. We're trying AOPS English class this semester in hopes of writing improvement but nothing to report yet. |

I know many people who love writopea, and they have a bunch of locations. The ones I know did it in Tenleytown.

Writeopia seems to be geared to the passionate writer more so than the DC who needs more instruction. Does anyone have experience with this they can talk to? The thing I find really frustrating about all these programs is what a poor job they do in communicating. Ironic. What’s their curriculum based on? I know so many people who are looking for a Hochman Method approach, but can’t even find a reference to sentence-paragraph-essay structure anywhere in these descriptions. Who is this program geared toward? Passionate writers, reluctant writers, parents who are trying to keep their kids occupied for a couple weeks? Most of these descriptions seem to cater to the latter based on their blandness. Does anyone at these companies respond to an email? (Not generally.) It would be genius if they followed the discussion on DCUM, where parents come for information (with a side of snark). The only exception to this seems to be the math programs, but only about math. They are really clear on who should be in what math class, but go back to being wishy-washy on language arts courses. Rant over. Can anyone provide guidance on who Writeopia is geared toward? Or anyone who uses the Hochman Method? |
yes, math programs are really numerous and well-thought out in most cases. i, too, struggle to find meaningful writing/language arts courses for my kids (they currently live abroad and attend local school) |
| any experience with Hungtinton tutoring? |
| Bump - I’m looking into the aops language arts course for my rising 4th grader. Can anyone update if their child did the summer course? |
| Ms. Michelle on Outschool.com. My reluctant writer became an unstoppable writer after two private sessions with her. The teacher is fun and very good at motivating kids. She uses colorful organizers as well as GoogleDoc and adds comments on what my kid writes. She is a reading specialist. |
Hi PP. May I please ask how you used their materials? I’m seeing teaching writing as well as grammar. Did you use both of them? https://www.christianbook.com/page/homeschool/language-arts/institute-for-excellence-in-writing?utm_source=google&kw=iew%20writing&mt=b&dv=m&event=PPCSRC&p=1018818&gclid=CjwKCAjw6MKXBhA5EiwANWLODNoOWCfUlkN2HwrQbHse3fDXC3Smc5NXALpboeoqDE8qJJ0Ep3fw3xoC5sYQAvD_BwE |
