Hello!

Can anyone recommend a gay friendly ob who delivers at Sibley?

Thanks so much!

Dr. Engel from Reiter, Hill, Johnson & Neville. The whole practice is pretty good, except for Reiter.

I'd agree with this. Loved Dr. Engel, and the other docs as well. Never saw Dr. Reiter.

I could see Dr. Loveland (female doc) being pretty GLBT friendly. I'm a straight woman, but she's just a really nice person all-around. Plus, she helped me end up not getting a c-section although many other doctors probably would have pushed me in that direction.

Dr. Reiter isn't bad; he just has an offputting bedside manner. He ended up delivering me. That being said, I saw him for 10 minutes in the morning and just for the amount of time it took for me to actually deliver the baby. He's not fuzzy-wuzzy, but he is extremely competent. And, after he had washed up after the delivery, he came back with his camera and took pictures of my husband, baby, and me. AND delivered 8x10 glossies the next morning.

However, with RHJ, you never know who will be on call when you deliver. They suggest that you rotate through their docs (probably 10-15 on staff).

I can recommend Dr. Russell Bridges. He was great with my twin pregnancy, and he's a solo, so you know you'll get him for delivery.

Yes, our son was delivered by Dr. Johnson at Sibley, but we also worked very closely with Dr. Jackson (was supposed to deliver, but our son came on his own time!) and Dr. Engle. Muffi King is a great nurse practitioner, too. Really, our experience at Sibley was INCREDIBLE!

Everyone at RHJN is pretty awesome, but I'd avoid Dr. Reiter like the plague. Trust me. He was very rude to my partner and me.

We're at RHJN and rotating, and everyone so far has been great. I asked Dr. Radecki (my gyn there who doesn't do ob) and she had nothing bad to say about anyone. Of course, I kind of like Reiter and find him amusing My wife adores him. So, maybe we're just weird. In any case, he may be off-putting, but he has been lesbo-friendly to us. I picked him to do my c-section.

Dr. Bruce Bonn is gay and very committed to LGBT rights and women's reproductive rights and health. Although I'm not sure he does OB anymore, I'm quite sure that his practice partners do. They all have privileges at Sibley. Bonn does fertility and surgery in addition to GYN. Can't say enough good things about him; he is a skilled and caring doctor who invests a great deal of effort in his patients and treats all as individuals. Anyone who practices with him is great in my book.

Dr. Robert Footer is a great OB and delivers at Sibley. He's been a top doctor in the Washontonian. He's a nice guy and has always treated my as an equal to my pregnant parter.

Dr. Matthew Peterson at Reiter Hill is very, very gay-friendly, and has a nice manner. We haven't delivered yet, though.

Dr. Loveland was our ob during our twin pregnancy, she delivers at Sibley - and my wife and I loved her so much that we now both see her as our regular gyn.

Personally, I think she's the best doctor - of any specialty, in any city - that I've ever had.

The only problem is that lots of people seem to feel the same way, so it can be difficult to schedule with her.

So, a bit off topic, but I'm a former DC resident now living in a faraway state. As I was reading this thread I kept seeing references to "my wife" and thinking it was men responding, which I thought was odd given the thread topic. Then it occurred to me...oh, duh! Gay marriage is now legal in DC! I wish it were the same in my current state of residence, but unfortunately it seems to be heading the other direction.

Three cheers for places that have it right - marriage equality can only help to create stronger families.

Dr. Heather Johnson of Ritter, Hill, and Johnson was AMAZING!! We are from NC and traveled to DC to have our son. Since NC is battling a ban on gay marriage amendment, we wanted to have some leagal protection from another state by having my partner be on the birth certificate. Dr. Johnson has a wonderful bed side manor and was the head of her academic dept before going into private practice. She delivered our son via c-section on 12 Apr 12. She treated my partner as a 100% equal mom. She visited me every day I was in the hopital over a weekend. She listened to all of my fears, gripes, and complaints.

We finished our prenatal care with Dr. Johnson at 36 weeks. Our son was born via c-section at 39 weeks. The whole practice is very good I hear but Dr. Johnson was truly wonderful. The ultrasound tech is gay and there are 2 other Dr.'s in the practice that are gay, though I do not know their names.

Sibley is an older hospital and the rooms are small. The night nurses leave something to be desired but the lactation consultants were outstandning.

Dr. Johnson and Sibley Memorial are he way to go for any same sex couple having a baby in DC!

Good luck!

Just a note- being on a birth certificate is nice, but does not offer true legal protection. That's what the lawyers told my wife and I. (much like our marriage is only valid in certain states)

Congrats on your new addition!

Bani Bajaj at Capital Womens Care. Can't say enough good things about her. The one down side is Capital Womens Care - your experience with the front office staff will either be really good or REALLY bad.
