Teens and IUD?

I read a different article in the Post anbou pain from insertion and it made me angry because so many doctors as dismissive of it.

The Post has published a few articles about the pain and I’m sharing them here to include the one I mentioned and the one PP mentioned.

Because condoms can slip or even break. But you're right, if you really don't want to get pregnant or get and STD both are needed.

My girls got the arm implant in their later teens for period issues, but have both continued on them as adults (one is married not wanting kids yet and one is a single person). It was really successful for them. One is on her 3rd and one on 2nd implant.

Wait - while she is not OP, there are newer, smaller IUDs made just for teens and tweens.

They are smaller and I’m sure insertion must be much easier.

Tweens? OMG.

11yo get periods…even 9-10 year olds…

Every body is different. Talk to the OB/GYN about your daughter's current periods and see what they recommend. I have endometriosis and tried numerous methods of BC.The IUD worked best for me, with few side effects, something I had while on various pills, patches, ring etc.

Thanks. You are the voice of reason and speaking from experience.

So much more reasonable than a TikTok shock video.

IUDs may not be for every girl, but neither are hormone-based contraceptives. It comes down to person choice / best option for your daughter.

My teen who couldn't handle BC pills (constant vomiting) initially got a copper IUD because she wanted to avoid hormones. That was fairly miserable (painful periods) and she finally got the Mirena at age 20 or so. It caused none of the nausea that she experienced from BCP, probably because the dose is much lower.

They aren’t. Mine is on Kylena.

My 19 year old has one. Not primarily for birth control but to help prevent cysts which she’s been gettin a lot. Insertion was fine. They gave her some sort of relaxant might have been Xanax to take before the appointment

No, the painful part is prying the cervix open.

They can give a cervical ripener the day before that helps.

I had my first IUD before kids and while it was VERY painful the pain was also over in maybe 10 seconds. I had some cramping the rest or the day and sat on the couch and ate pizza, went to bed and it was over. 7 years of perfect birth control, it was worth it.

DD passed out. She now has a Xanax prescription for medical procedures.

My daughter has one of the smaller ones. I think it might be Kylena. She was freaking out before she got it based on all the TikTok videos she watched. She initially wanted to be put under by the Dr talked her into trying Valium (or something similar) to see if that would work. It did and now she doesn't have to worry about it again for 7 years. Hers was recommended to treat potential endometriosis. The downside to the one she got vs the Mirena, which I have, is that it doesn't stop her periods but it does lighten them and make them less painful/more easily managed.

And multiple people get pregnant while on the pill. Nothing is perfect.

I would be really supportive - IUDs are great birth control. I would definitely seek out an OB GYN who would do it under anesthesia or sedation. There’s zero reason not to.

I know more people who had it move than got pregnant. Horrific stores I’ve heard about those things.
