For MC BOE, not everyone needs to be a teacher; not everyone needs to have a student in MCPS (they would represent the many county residents who also don't have kids in MCPS); not everyone needs to have a certain view. What I've seen in this thread is that a lot of people care for example about security, so a candidate with expertise in that would be helpful for example. A member who is a lawyer; and another who is an expert on budget would also be useful.

You need a majority vote for something to pass in BOE, so one person can't change the path of the BOE anyway, but one person with expertise in an area the board lacks can be useful.

I'm not pushing any one candidate or another, just saying that the sky isn't necessarily falling just because one person with different views or expertise from the rest of the BOE gets elected. It's OK to have a non-MCPS parent on the BOE for example -- MCPS budget is about half of the entire county budget, so even non-parents would like to have a voice on how their taxpayer money is spent.

This is what I said upthread. I know M4L is real but here in MoCo they are not a threat. I think DCUM gives them much more power and visibility than they have in MOCO IRL.

I never thought Donald Trump could get elected in this country, but here we are AGAIN. That taught me to pay attention, whether the threat to human rights is national or local.

DP. Voters need to pay attention to who's on the ballot, then vote. After the election on May 14, if the hate-slate candidates lose big (which I hope they do), I will be happy to agree that, in hindsight, I might have overreacted.

As a teacher and counselor in MCPS for 35+ years, I love the idea of having a young teacher on the Board, so I’m backing Zimmerman. I’m undecided on the other two. With the number of teachers and administrators quitting or retiring and fewer young people going into teaching, we are heading for a major crisis in the teacher shortage in MCPS. Zimmerman can speak directly to the intense stress teachers face, the lack of support from Central Office and the lack of discipline in the schools. The BOE needs a shake up and needs people who will stand up against the status quo. Clearly the board needs to do a better job overseeing Central Office. These positions need to be made full time so that they can do that but that’s a whole other issue. Zimmerman is facing a huge salary cut by running for the board and I like the guts that this takes.

Fact Mandel & Diaz support and speak for Moms4Liberty so they are unqualified for any position on the BOE. Mandel in particular has no zero no qualifications. FACT she is suing the school system and the BOE again fact.

FACT Mandel "dibs on horny teens", FACT got retail workers fired laughed about it and called herself out for doing so but does it over and over again. The way she talks about the Homeless is horrific so again fact she is not qualified to sit on the BOE much less any board.

And I don't care what you think I have facts you do not.

Umm.. there really aren't a lot of actual facts in what you wrote above as "Fact" -- a lot are opinions.

Fact: "Moms For Liberty" has strong ties to MAGA/right-wing-nationalist people and groups.
Fact: Brenda Diaz and Bethany Mandel have participated in events sponsored by the local "Moms For Liberty" group

Those are facts and not opinions like pp has posted. For me, I don’t care if they have ties or relations to moms 4 liberty. It’s not important to me. There is a candidate who promotes cannabis. That’s a huge red flag to me. These are my opinions and the pp needs to know the difference.

Scare mongering is alive and well in MoCo. MAGA isnt coming for your kids so calm down. Parents are tired of being lied to and seeing scandal after scandal come out of MCPS. Change is needed- accountability isn’t the rw boogeyman or MAGA dog whistle so chill out. Even if new people are elected, they’re going to have a big job ahead of them. They’ll have to work with the other BOE members as well as MCPS- both of whom seem loathe to any change or transparency.
