While I completely agree with you, au pairs were able to do this for decades until now. I think we set the bar pretty too low and make excuses for these so called needs.

OP, maybe you could encourage your AP to invest in socializing with other APs in the area- she sounds lonely, and she will need a social network for you all to get through the year together.
