My time working for the court is a little old, but it used to be the case if you had 12 mos or more, you go to a state prison. Under that, you stay at the county jail.

This was a street not a highway…
Even highways have 65 mph limit.
It’s a disregard for any life.
I know Virginia has deers too like seriously I go slow because can you imagine hitting a deer and causing any life any harm?

Way to shift the blame. Stopping not speeding up is the right option he didn’t choose. He chose to speed up and swerve. The 2 deaths are the direct result of his actions.

This is the problem with ppl like you constantly looking for someone else to blame, the “he made me do it” mentality. Grow up and take accountability.

A learners permit means you are learning how to drive.
It’s not a full drivers license….
To my knowledge it is a restricted one

You need someone over 21, not necessarily a parent, but presumably someone who is instructing you. It’s not a license to drive.

I thought it was 25? My youngest child recently got his license, but before he did, my oldest child (who was 23) offered to take him out for practice drives, but I said no because I thought the adult had to be at least 25?

If Shahid had merely been going 60mph when he first was able to see that intersection (about 1.5 blocks away from impact) he would have been able to stop completely or slow down to a very low impact accident.

The SUV was IN the intersection, fully stopped, long before Shahid came through. He had time to deceleration, but apparently was focused on the color of the light and his friends. He didn't notice the SUV sitting there because he is inexperienced and didn't think to look at the scene in the road AS HE APPROACHED. The timing matters.

If someone pulls into your lane just one second before you arrive in the intersection, you cannot stop. If someone pulls into your lane while you are a block or more away, then YOU have an obligation to stop or try to stop. Even if they are sitting in your lane.

Who had "the last clear chance" to avoid the collision? That will come up a lot in the civil case.

LOL at all these people twisting themselves into pretzels to defend Shahid. You can give it up now. He is deservedly going to do time in the slammer. Why don’t you all hope he learns something from this and doesn’t take any more innocent lives.

it is alarming when people try to shift the blame..
Cars weigh over TWO TONS.
Getting run over by TWO TONS at a speed of 81 mph is beyond imaginable

“cars can be weapons capable of inflicting severe injuries and even death. Cars weigh over two tons and can reach speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour. “

For everyone saying “if he was never speeding, this could’ve happened” it’s the same as “if the other car yielded and never blocked the road, this would’ve never happened” just use some brain cells here y’all. They’re both at fault
When you are driving, if someone pulls in front of you or turns in front of you, then you brake to avoid them. You don't accelerate and try to drive around them.
You, being an experienced, licensed driver? Sure. That probably happens most of the time.
Since you seem to be an inexperienced driver, I am informing you how to drive safely.
You are confusing posters.

If you’re going to teach anyone how to drive tell the 4Runner to wait until it’s clear before turning.
Maybe tell that loser not to drive 81 mph when he’s not even legally licensed.
Yes, obviously. Shahid made multiple errors.

But he wasn’t the only one at fault here.
Maybe. But “right of way” does not equal “right to hit”. The driver with the right of way still has a legal obligation to try and avoid an accident, even if the other driver has made an error. Knowingly driving without a valid license and exceeding the speed limit by more than double in a residential area clearly indicate disregard for that responsibility.

I also came across some information that seems to indicate three exceptions to an automatic ruling of fault against a left turn driver in situations like this, and Shahid meets two of them - that the right of way driver was speeding, and that the left-turn driver had a clear path when he or she began the turn, but something caused a delay in the maneuver.

Did the 4Runner driver make a mistake? Maybe. But that’s irrelevant to this case. Driving is not a right but a privilege that comes with responsibility, and Shahid knowingly and recklessly failed to respect that.

Think my home state is 25. In VA it’s 21 or a sibling who is over 18.

The Shahid defenders who have flocked here to blame the other driver are only making Shahid and his parents look worse. These defenders no doubt are echoing the baseless claims made by his family and lawyers. Their refusal to accept any responsibility is sending the wrong message to his friends and supporters: that what he did wasn’t all that bad, that someone else is primarily or equally at fault, and that the police and prosecution zeroed in on the wrong guy. All of that is, of course, complete nonsense.

I hope the sentence recommended by the jury and issued by the judge is enough to make clear to similarly situated defendants that they’re better off admitting guilt and taking responsibility than seeking to blame others for the harm they’ve caused.

The runner driver wasn't charged. He got immunity for providing testimony. Had nothing to do with the criminal charge. I can only think that the parents are using this maneuver to blame Jim in order to reduce theirs and Shalids civil claim. It really did not do much for the criminal case.

There was a comment questioning jury’s competency too LOL
that said maybe jury didn’t understand or something

All this bickering is pointless. Usman is guilty. Now he gets to look forward to a decade in prison.
