Surprising Potomac School

Anonymous
Watched my sons team (Mclean HS) play against The Potomac School last week. Admittedly our team is not great but Potomac, while small, was surprisingly good. I thought their difficult academics sometimes made it hard for them to compete in every sport but perhaps they are turning a corner. I don't know what they are doing but the first two goalies they played (they had 4 total) were amazing. The starter was solid and only gave up a few after a number of great saves and then the next goalie came in and was even better. I don't know how many saves but the parents around me (from both schools) were stunned that he just couldn't be scored on. They then let in what looked like 2 younger goalies and they were both good, just not on the level of the first 2. They had some very small players all over the field but had a few big boys on defense. There was one player on offense who was bigger and seemed to be in charge and most things ran through him so that might be a problem down the road but the smaller players were scrappy. Again, Mclean HS is not a lacrosse powerhouse by any stretch so it might not be a very good case for basing the judgement on, maybe just rationalizing losing. I guess we'll see how they do this year.

Yeah, very hard to compare public v. private school. Just no comparison really. Even a state champion team will not compare to an average IAC or WCAC team.

Thanks for the report Potomac school goalie mom. Your son was great!

Was that really necessary?

That is interesting to hear because yes, strong athletes sometimes (and its usually lax players) leave the school because the academics are too demanding and they cant get top grades. It usually happens after 8th but last year the freshman class lost some boys to Landon who couldnt handle the academic demands and there are rumors the 8th grade once again has strong players looking to switch to schools like Landon, GP and Gonzaga. Niced to know the team looked good. Coach Via is a good guy.

You are right. It is not necessary to point out that was not really a McLean parent who was the OP. We all knew who posted. Good call

I'm the OP and definitely not a Potomac (or goalie) parent. I only wrote the comment because my son said (in his words) "Potomac is trash" and then they got beat by them. I don't know why I bother to post on this board, everyone is just nasty and cynical all the time. If I were a Potomac parent I would have proudly said "Potomac is going to turn some heads this year" and if I was a goalie mom of one of their goalies I would say "And their goalies are unstoppable." There's no need to try to brag on kids like that. I'm a proud mom and would definitely brag without any subterfuge.

I would guess friends with the "big guy on offense" who just moved from McLean to Potomac. How thoughtful.

Yes my son definitely knew the attacker who moved from Mclean to Potomac but that wasn't who did all the scoring so it wasn't a humble brag either. For clarity, my son is a long pole defender. Again, quick cynical snipes seem to be the order of the day here.

“Niced to know....”

Tells you everything you need to know about the credibility of poster and his/her thoughts on kids allegedly leaving Potomac because the academics are too hard. Fake post!

I think “niced to know” was definitely a Potomac parent but I don’t think he/she is hiding that. Who else knows who the coach by name?

God you people are weird. Its a typo. Its also the truth. My kid is an athlete in the Potomac upper school who thought about leaving after 8th.

All started because goalie’s mommy wanted a little more recognition. Potomac......

Interesting that the OP quotes her own son saying that “Potomac is trash.” If my son spoke that way about an opponent, I would not brag about it. Of course you and your your son are anonymous on this board, but it is not a good look for the McLean program or its coaches.
