Does this sound like the flu?

Anonymous
DS (4.5) went to bed last night fine. Woke up an hour later 104 fever, vomitting. Acetaminophen only brought temperature down one degree through the night. Today, no vomit, no diarrhea. Still 103ish fever (even with Acetaminophen). Complaining of being cold. Tired. Weak.

Pediatrician was closed today. On-call Doc speculated stomach flu. Doesn't really fit to me...b/c only 2 episodes of vomitting, no diarrhea and continued fever (but I'm not a doctor ) Told me to wait it out till tomorrow, check back in. Spoke to another one of DS's Doc's about other matter (he has a lot of Specialists) and mentioned illness. That Doc prescribed Tamiflu b/c he has a lot of medical complications. Started Tamiflu this evening. Also was told to watch out for the possibility it is really strep and not flu.

Any BTDT parents that have personally lived through this? Sound like viral/flu or strep?

Hi OP any updates on your DS??

I would think either flu or strep. My kids always present with vomiting, fever, and headache when they have strep. They have never once complained about their throat hurting before a positive strep swab...so it's always a surprise to find out it's strep.

I would try to get him in for a strep test.
If it is flu, the tamiflu should help...but be on the watch for psychological/emotional side effects. My son did great with it, but still had a fever for 6 days.
If it's strep, he's going to need antibiotics.

OP here. Thanks for the replies.

Turns out he has strep and a double ear infection. He has never had strep before so I had no idea it could present with such terrible symptoms. He was so miserable I honestly thought he had H1N1.

Ped's office warned of same side effects mentioned about the Tamiflu. He did vomit this morning after I gave it to him (before we knew about the strep). And was miserable!! But I can't say it was b/c of the strep or the Tamiflu. If he ever gets H1N1, I think I would still try the Tamiflu even knowing the potential side effects. But, my DS has asthma and the flu is scary.
