DS is sick, but weird as he has very low grade fever during day, but spikes every night to 103?

Sound familiar to anyone? It just seems strange.....this is the 3rd day in a row, wakes up with NO fever, then low grade during the day, but hovers around 103 at night. And for a kid that is bouncing around all day, the wimpering and high fever at night just seems so strange. He already had swine flu early in the fall. Ped saw him when he first came down with this 3 days ago, and said it was probably another flu strain. Strep was negative, and ears were clear.
Thanks everyone.

We had it, it lasts several days. Had regular flu shot and had H1N1 earlier in the fall, so our doc said same thing, different strain. Hope he is feeling better soon, think my older DD might be coming down with it, sigh.

Most fevers are like that, aren't they? Lower in the morning, increasing by nighttime.

How old is he? If he's still fairly young, it could be any of those viral rashes.

He is 5. Yes fevers are always higher at night, but this feels more extreme. He is fine during the day, but right around 6, he starts getting chills, and then his fever goes up really fast....He also had the seasonal vaccine in Sept, and swine flu also in september.

hmmmm.....

My kids' ped says the fever comes back at night.

I'm the viral rash poster. The only other thing my son's had that is somewhat like that was RSV, but he again was very young. It was about 100 during the day but spiked almost uncontrollably up near 104 at night and couldn't be held down unless I did the Motrin/Tylenol mix and room temp. baths. He had extraordinarily thick and plentiful mucous with that, though.

fevers in my kids seem to go up in the PM and then get worse towards the night -- break in the early morning, like 2 AM.

Who knows what this is, but my kid also had (suspected) H1N1 last spring (never confirmed but high fevers for 5 days with sore throat and some cough). He got sick three weeks ago with something similar to what you describe -- no fever in the morning, feeling great, then it came back in the evening for a few days. Also had a bag cough though.

This is the way fever works in mammals. Our defenses go down at night.

Sounds like a typical virus.

Yeah my 5 yr old DS has the same thing. Around 5 or 6pm starts to feel warmer, starts the sniffles, starts coughing, can't stay awake past 7pm and gets warmer throughout the night. But by the morning, he wakes up totally normal and acting fine. This was night 3 of this for us, hopefully doesn't continue much longer.

Yup, normal. Fevers are much higher at night.

Did they also culture for strep, not just rapid strep? There's a 5-10% false negative rate with the rapid streps.
