“Poor Thing” -good all around or just cinematographically

After it won so many Oscar’s I finally put it on this weekend and only got through 30 minutes before i turned it off. I do not get the acing award for Stone. She just seemed fake to me - overacting. And the pedophile themes were too much for me. Now I’m even more an outed that other movies were passed over for this one in multiple categories. I loved Saltburn - I’m quite surprised people are comparing this to that.

Finally, someone who gets it! This is exactly what Yorgos Lanthimos goes for in his movies. A weird autistic-adjacent sense of humor.

Sorry PP but "raunchy" is not the right word for this movie. It was gratuitous after a point and anyone with two eyes would realize that.

Nope, not even close to gratuitous. She has her tits out quite a bit, and a lot of simulated sex, but nothing gratuitous. I bet you’re the same type of person that was frothing at the mouth over Saltburn.
To be frank, it’s a very weird movie, but Emma Stone puts in a phenomenal performance here and should win the Oscar.

Tend to agree with that. There were sexual themes for sure, but everything was in the realm of "conversation" for me and my kid." Maybe this would be a "no" for others?.

How old is your "kid"?!

Getting raped by a parade of strangers is not a "stage of life".

OP here - been on 10 minutes & don’t know anything about the plot - just familiar with title due to award nominations

Frankenstein meets Pygmalion is what all the reviews say.

Meets Rochelle, Rochelle.

Also, God makes Adam and Eve, and then Eve runs off with the serpent.

Terrible movie. I have no idea how Emma Stone won an Oscar for it. Imagine her kids watching it when they’re older… good grief.

+1. The cinematography was the only saving grace. I felt like a film student again sitting through one of my prof's faves taking notes on all the strange things he would have raved about.

It made me sick. I have a daughter with disabilities and it was one rape scene after another.

My DH and I, who watch lot of independent, foreign, and avant garden film and thought we'd at least find this movie interesting, discussed potentially leaving it on mute while we played cards just so we could continue to enjoy the visuals. But like many others, after about 30 minutes, we deemed it a waste of our collective time and turned it off.

Stone has been good in other things. This role is a reminder that the Academy loves to reward conventionally attractive actors who choose roles where they are unattractive, mentally impaired, or preferably, both. If only they could have found an excuse to put Stone in a fat suit, her win would never have been in doubt.

You can tell it was a man's point of view. The Academy still has issues if it chooses this movie for one of it's highest honors and yet cannot even nominate the leading female actor or director of a thoughtful, worthy female empowering movie.

Just watched this. Gorgeous, hilarious, utterly original movie. Loved the costumes.

I happy other people couldn't stand it either. I thought it was awful! I'll give it another try this weekend with DH. I really don't like the concept though.

I plan on watching it again this weekend. Emma Stone is hilarious in this movie and quite rightly won the Oscar for her performance.

When I was a teen I worked at a grocery store. One of the baggers was a beautiful blonde in her 20s who looked completely normal -- but when you spoke to her it was obvious she had the mentality of a 6 year old. Her parents drove her to and from work and I can only imagine how they worried about her. That's what this sick movie reminded me of.
