What do you call these cakes and where are you from?

Anonymous
1. A white cake with white frosting.
2. A yellow cake with chocolate frosting.
3. A chocolate cake with chocolate frosting.

I’m from Baltimore.
1. Vanilla cake
2. Chocolate cake
3. Devil’s food

2 is my favorite of the three, but people here don’t seem to have a specific name for it and they call 3 chocolate cake.

I'm from Howard County. I never had names for one and two. But I wouldn't call 2 chocolate cake. Only the frosting is chocolate.

I do call 3 devil's food cake. It's supposed to be the opposite of angel food cake.

1) need more information. Like angel food cake? Coconut? Or do you mean yellow with white frosting?
2) Simply called "yellow cake with chocolate frosting"
3) chocolate cake

I would be angry with you if you referred to yellow cake with chocolate frosting, as "chocolate cake." That is so unkind.

White cake is like this and doesn’t have coconut. That’s coconut cake.

I would probably call it yellow cake or white cake. I wouldn't call it vanilla cake.

“The surest way to detect an old-time Baltimorean is to seek definition of chocolate layer cake.

Contrary to what some may believe, one Baltimorean believes that a chocolate cake is made with layers of white
(actually pale yellow) cake dough, spread with chocolate icing.

An old-fashioned Baltimore chocolate cake must have white insides covered with a fine chocolate icing.“

Also from HoCo.

1) cake
2) cake
3) chocolate cake

If the conversation warranted details, I would use the descriptions in the OP (“white cake with white frosting”, etc).

Doesn’t matter. My answer: “Numer 3, please.”

You call yellow cake chocolate. Pls don’t blame that on Baltimore.

Canadian, and it would be as above.

Devils food is a specific kind of cake to me, like angel food cake, only chocolate.
