Why apply ED1, when you can try SCEA or ED1 elsewhere and then if that falls try ED2?

ED1 has a higher acceptance rate- admission officers in ED2 know they're dealing with Ivy/other elite ED1/SCEA rejects. UChicago also gives housing priority the sooner you deposit, so doing ED1 pretty much guarantees you'll get your room of choice given how soon you find out relative to others in the admit class. Some people also might do ED2 to another elite instead, like top LACs or Vanderbilt or WashU (which is adding ED2 this year). |
Yes, that’s probably the optimal strategy for prestige whores who believe that UChicago is approximately as prestigious as at least some of the HYPS schools. It would involve being willing to commit to UChicago before knowing whether any of the other three SCEA schools would admit you in the RD round.
But, honestly, unless the applicant (I can’t tell whether the prestige whore is a kid or parent) affirmatively wants to go to UChicago (i.e. it’s his or her first or second choice school and that preference is based on an understanding of Chicago’s schedule, Core requirements, and rigor), then it’s probably not a good plan. HYPS schools and a number of other elites have something for everybody. Chicago is more like MIT. Some people would love it. Others would be miserable there. I say this as a big UChicago (and MIT) fan. (As well as an alumn of 2 of the SCEA schools). |

I don't think there has been any data indicating ED2 applicants fare less well than ED1 applicants at UChicago. Only 2 years of experience thus far and the first year they were flying blind (and ended up increasing class size in what seemed to be a response to misjudging the comparative strength of the two pools). My sense is, abstractly, there’s no penalty for applying ED2 (vis ED1) to UChicago, but there might be HS specific situations where ED1 applicants have an edge some years. |
