Aftercare in DCPS (OSTP) - How competitive?

Anonymous
How competitive are aftercare spots (OSTP)? If I'm not able to register when they open on May 1 for the following year, will I be out of luck? What do people do who don't get a spot? Are there private options?

(Specifically looking at Watkins Elementary.)

TIA!

It varies widely from school to school as they are all grappling with the limited funding and general suckitude of dealing with OSTP.

Register immediately on first day... right when it opens.

We are going to sign up but not optimistic about as our school had a long wait list last year.
Did All of DCPS ever find funding aftercare for the last few weeks of school this year?? Or are individual schools left to figure it out on theit own or just close??
Has funding even been secured for next year with all the federal budget changes?

Yes they found funding for current year.

Funding for OSTP next year is up in Bowser’s budget request. Before Council now.

Watkins also has springboard. My kid is not in aftercare, but I *think* there are 3 aftercare programs -- DPR, OSTP, and Springboard. Costs vary from free to expensive. But you won't get shut out of springboard.

Not that expensive, as I recall. Less than springboard. They are called Rita's Place & Joe's Den, staffed by teachers and aides. As far as I know no shutouts over there either! Some Watkins kids go back to Peabody for aftercare on the bus, usually older siblings of Peabody kids.

Thank you! That's super helpful!

What about if you have kids at both Peabody and Watkins? Any way to do before/after care at the same place?

Watkins aftercare doesn't take kids younger than 1st grade, but Peabody takes kids up to 5th grade (the Watkins kids take the bus to Peabody for aftercare). So you can keep multiple kids in Peabody aftercare.
