Why didn't the Democrats pass gun control legislation when they had a super-majority?

Anonymous
I've always wondered this. It's easy to throw your hands up in the air when you are in the minority, but talk is cheap. When the Democrats had a super majority in the Senate, a Democratic House, and a Democratic President, they did nothing about gun control.
Anonymous
OP, how long do you think they had the supermajority for?

Dems didn’t want to take on the NRA at the federal level. And the lunatic fringe was already losing their collectively ignorant, racist sh*t about Obama confiscating their guns and Jade Helm and whatever other swamp fever dreams cinco ted by Hannity and Alex Jones.

Blue dogs would have mixed it

People forget that Democrats in red states have to be more

They were working on health care. If there had been a shooting, I’m sure they would have responded. I’m happy they got the ACA and repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell through before 2011. I wish they could have done more and if they could have seen the future, I think they would have.

No offense, but what you're saying is it isn't/is a priority. Either it is, or it isn't no? They didn't need to see the future. this has been on the table for a long time. I think OPs question is fair. As to blue dogs democrats...if you have integrity then you vote and don't get reelected. Don't hold conservatives to standards you won't hold dem pols to. Sheesh.

My goodness OP. Either you are ignorant or you don't get all the U.S. news in Russia. We had the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (1994-2004)
under Bill Clinton but it was allowed to expire under Bush in 2004. By that time the NRA was buying off politicians. I wish the next crazy with a gun would raid NRA headquarters. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Assault_Weapons_Ban

That brief period was the first and only true supermajority since the 1970s IIRC. Dems spent most of it (9 months?) trying to find middle ground with Republicans on ACA, and that turned out to be a waste of time because Republicans turned around and attacked ACA as soon as they could. Given how polarized Trump and the Republicans have made politics now, you can rest assured that if/when Dems get a supermajority again anytime soon, they will pass anything and everything on their wish list without even trying to get Republican support.

IMHO, Republicans have screwed themselves in the long term, because they have united the Dems and most independents against them for at least the next decade or two. Expect a lot of major legislation after the 2020 election, because its looking like Dems will get a supermajority then.

Two other points -

1. A lot of time was spent on trying to fix the 2008 financial meltdown crisis, so that made Dems less productive than they might have been. And still, that two year period is considered one of the most productive Congresses ever.

2. Dems did not hold a true 60% supermajority, so they were vulnerable to Republican blocks on core legislation where they couldn’t peel away some Republican support. That probably explains the inability to do anything on gun safety, because the Repubs will fight that to the death.

Lots of excuses here, but no real answers.

OP asked a good question. Same could be asked about immigration. These issues really aren’t priorities for Dems. Otherwise, there would have been action.
Dems use them as wedge issues.

Democrats could have done it, but they didn’t. It’s a shame.

Can you ask your awesome Republican government to fix it now? I think they said that they were going to fix all the shlt that Democrats created. Remember MAGA?

Tbh, Obama made sure that atleast mentally ill wont qualify to own a gun, but Trump reversed that few months ago. Not sure if that’s the right path to achieve that MAGA. Did you write a letter to Donald to not reverse that law or do you also think that mentally ills should have the gun?

They f*cked up too, OP. There. Our politicians are cowards.

Ok, you want priorities? In 2009-10, healthcare reform IS a higher priority than gun violence. Healthcare saved many more people than died from guns. In 2009-10, the financial crisis Republicans created IS a higher priority than gun safety. More people would die from a financial collapse than from gun violence.

So yeah, Democrats spent all their political capital and time getting those items passed. Does that mean gun safety isn’t a priority? nope.

We are coming for you now. I hope the rest of your cowardly life is miserable and short.
