How was your child's PK3 experience here? We are in the district for this school, and are trying to decide if we should go with it or focus more heavily on charter/private schools, etc. |
Most DCPS do prk classes pretty well. But you should go visit to see if it seems like a good fit for your child. A lot of DCPS that don't look so great on paper are actually pretty good schools with great teachers.
We are IB at Bunkerhill and have overall been happy with the PK program. At this point we feel like we would be okay staying at our IB other than the lack of aftercare options. You should definitely check out your nearly DCPS schools for prk at the very least. You might find it is actually a great school if not you saved a couple years of private tuition you put towards private elementary or middle school. |
Thing is if you live in bounds for Burroughs, you're nearby to some really nice charter schools. Definitely try to visit all of them including Burroughs and make your list accordingly. |
Previous Burroughs parent, I have recently learned that the PK 4 teachers are now the PK3 teachers ay Burroughs. And I can guarantee that you will be happy and pleased with your child’s personalized experience. The teachers are GREAT! I had a year with those teachers who truly work as a team. You will be happy. After my wonderful PK experience, I ultimately did switch to a popular Brookland charter but I do not feel the same care and personal interaction as I did at Burroughs but I made my choice and I am living with it. The families and other students, out weigh the mediocre teachers at my present charter. It’s just that I feel that there are not enough neighborhood families at Burroughs just yet. The change will come but there will have to be some personnel changes soon. ECE will be fine. Brookland is heavIly saturated with Highly regarded charters , so take a chance. I definitely would consider Burroughs as a strong “safety” out of the DC Public Schools in Brookland . Don’t hesitate, you will be happy. The neighborhood charters have more neighborhood families but that demographic is definitely changing. Every Brookland family can’t get into Stokes, YuYing , LAMB and the others. Don't hesitate listing Burroughs. Visit. You will be pleased, a personalized visit will change your mind. |
I am IB at Bunker Hill, too. I visited and liked it and the principal. There's a lot of opportunity there. Has a PTA started yet? Also, tell me a little more about PK at Bunker. Thanks! |
Don't u all love gentrification? Makes the schools better for those of us with money. It sucks for those urban families but hey if those families in brookland cared John Burroughs would have been a good school from the start |

Umm.. it is a good school and has been for a while. There are great kids & families at both schools and great teachers. Changing neighborhood demographics may or may not change the schools in the near future. Iam sure more money into the PtO/PTA will be welcome. But don't mistake that they are good scools that like all DCPS schools in NE could use more support from the community and Central Office. |
PTO is slowly getting going and definitely in the early stages but it there is a PTO! Hopefully they we will be able to get our feet, grow and do a little more each year to support our school! The school has made great strides, the principal is by the book but not lacking in compassion and understanding. All the teachers, leadership and support staff seem to actually care. They do their best to make time to speak with parents and support families. We really like the PRK teachers we have worked with thus far. We had a few road bumps getting the IEP services lined up. But the staff did make schedule changes and such to make sure they could accommodate all the students needs. (They had a a few more early stages kids service kiddos than they were used too.) The teacher's have tired to bring in fun experiences "in school field trips", etc. I am truly suprised at all they manage to teach 3/4 year olds! I wish there was more out door time but the teacher have tried to get creative when the do indoor recess. Even prk get "home work" which is really for parent engagement and keeping everyone on the same page. Also LOVE the small class sizes. Most of the other parents are friendly enough but playdates don't seem to be a big thing. Really is a good school with room to expand and continue with all of postive things thWY have going. The principal said they applied for and recived a grant for a school garden!!! Bunkerhill definitely tries to do the most they can with a small budget. Like all DCPS they could use a LOT more support and recourses from Central Office, mayor and the community. A big down side for us peronally is the lack of before and aftercare options. We hope with the school growing we can get more before or after care options in the future. |
Previous Burroughs parent:. Admit it was our safety school after all the neighborhood charters. We left after getting a spot in the neighborhood charter in Oct. Our new Charter school has the super active parent group I thought would then lead to a strong school environment for my kid but the teachers are not nearly as strong.
We left Burroughs because at the time the aftercare program was a mess and they were having problems keeping a principal. I bought into “charter has to be better,” theory which now I know to not always true. I will add Burroughs’ teacher Amy Beard is amazing as are the ladies in the front office. Live and learn. Good luck with your decision. |
What's the deal with before and aftercare - we will at least need aftercare! |
Would you mind saying which charter? |
