The importance of the Magnitsky Act in understanding why Russia meddled in the election

Anonymous
Bill Browder, the US born financier who retained Soviet lawyer Sergei Magnitsky to investigate corruption affecting Mr. Browder's Russian holdings, and then lobbied the US Government tirelessly for the passage of the Magnitsky Act after Mr. Magnitsky was murdered by the Russian government, is scheduled to testify tomorrow before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

His submitted statement clearly articulates the events which led to the Magnitsky Act's passage, the reasons why the Magnitsky Act is so deeply threatening to Russian President Putin (Hint: he is the Thief of All Thieves and the Magnitsky Act threatens his on-going "Protection Racket"), and the surreptitious efforts by the Russian government within the United States to get the Magnitsky Act repealed.

Follow the money. It is always about the money.

This is really interesting I always thought that the Russian ban on adoption came at the heels of that one horrible mother who tried to return her adopted son to Russia because she didn't want him anymorw

Hey very little doubt that there are financial ties to Trump and Putin because when there's smoke there's fire. I hope the truth comes to light.

I met Browder back in 2010. He spoke at my graduate school about the Magnitsky case and gave a fantastic presentation. The man is the real deal, he's been doggedly pursuing Putin for over a decade.

I admire his tenacity and honesty. It's refreshing.

OP here. What I liked about the article was Browder's clear presentation:

1. I had an investment company that had over $4B in Russian investments.
2. We were constantly getting ripped off by the corrupt oligarchs.
3. Putin took power and helped crack down on corruption, which helped my company protects its investments.
4. Putin figured if you can't beat 'em, join 'em, and told the oligarchs that if they cut him in for 50%, they could continue skimming from the state.
5. Once Putin joined the ranks of the oligarchs, they kicked me out of the country, retitled all my investments under the name of a Russian criminal, and then issued hundreds of millions in bogus tax refunds.
6. I hired a young lawyer to expose the corruption. He documented it extensively, but was arrested by the very people he was trying to expose, thrown into jail and tortured, and then died.
7. His blood is on my hands, so I have spent the last decade trying to hurt the oligarchs in the one place it counts---their pocketbooks. The Magnitsky Act allows the United States to target oligarchs so they can't park their ill-gotten gains in western assets (like Trump condos . . . )
8. As Putin is now the richest of the oligarchs, the Magnitsky Act is most threatening to him and his fortune. Also, if he can't adequately protect the oligarchs' ability to get their money into stable Western economies, then his value to his fellow thieves is substantially diminished.
9. A group of Putin -backed Russians and Armenians, including the two that met with Don Jr., have undertaken numerous measures to try to get the Magnitsky Act repealed.

This is one of the most interesting things I've read. Thanks for sharing OP.

If you want to yammer on about Clinton, please start your own thread.

It's pretty amazing how quickly they come out to try to derail the thread.
It looks like the Russians definitely have "Browder" as one of their flagged terms

Wow. That explains a lot.

So, Browder says that two people in the "inconsequential" June 9 2016 meeting at Trump tower -- lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya and ex Soviet intelligence guy Rinat Akmetshin -- were hired by the Russian Government to repeal the Magnitsky Act, which has the potential to freeze Putin's ill-gotten $200 billion secreted away in the West.

Here's what he says about Rinat:

Through HRAGI, Rinat Akhmetshin, a former Soviet intelligence officer naturalised as an American citizen, was hired to lead the Magnitsky repeal effort. Mr. Akhmetshin has been involved in a number of similar campaigns where he’s been accused of various unethical and potentially illegal actions like computer hacking.

Since he's an American, can't he be subpoenaed to testify before Congress?

Ugh! Could this get any uglier?

Interesting. I'd never heard of Browder until about 15 minutes ago. The Trump soap opera gets curiouser and curiouser every day.

Actually it will get much uglier Follow the money trail to the US lobby shops who were in turn hired by the Russians to lobby for repeal of the Magnitsky Act and see which party was involved.

It will get much uglier, but this needs to be exposed and the cancer rooted out of the US political system.

Fox News isn't talking about this. The main stream media outlets haven't covered it near enough. People need to share this statement to as many voters (regardless of party) as they can.

And I was wrong--Fox finally gave him airtime today.

Russia's kleptocracy, the Magnitsky Act, and the interference in the 2016 election (and on-going interference in US politics through lobbying efforts which violate FARA) are not a partisan issue. They are an AMERICAN issue.
