six mo old movements still flail-y, spazzy

Anonymous
I don't remember my first being quite like this! Baby can grasp and hold things and bring them to her mouth to chew, can roll back to stomach, and is trying desperately to lift up and move around (crawl). Solid head control. But she still very often flails her arms about in repetitive motions - for example, repetitively and vigorously punching herself in the stomach for like a minute and half. Not trying to grab something, not trying to roll... just flailing in a repetitive motion. Normal? Will ask Dr, trying to get it on video.

Sounds like she's still getting "organized." I can't quite picture the vigorous punching, but I've known lots of babies (developmental early childhood work) who still flail a bit wildly at that age, and they typically have strengths in areas other than gross motor functions as they grow older. Def. mention it to your ped., but I wouldn't really worry too much about it.

Also, though I know it was not intended this way, I wanted to mention that "spazzy" is viewed by some as offensive in the same way as "retard." http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/myl/languagelog/archives/003020.html

op here - wow i had no idea re "spazzy"! So sorry if I offended anyone, I just was using it as short hand for spastic which I thought of as a description for physical movement. Thank you PP for your response and letting me know about using the word - I appreciate it!
