Job Interview - outfit help

Anonymous
I have a job interview tomorrow and I would love some wardrobe help. It seems that suits are stuffy in the summer, but maybe I am mistaken...do you have any ideas?

Can I mix and colors, like black pants with a cream colored jacket?

Thanks!

What type of job is it? If it's a typical office job, I think you need to wear a suit.

I would default to a suit. You can wear a light-colored suit for summer, or even a dark suit with a pastel or light colored top, and some summery jewelry. If you have a pretty formal jacket, and its not a super formal office, you could probably get away with a pulled-together look with a jacket and pants. Also, I think closed-toe shoes are a must.

What industry and position are you applying for? I think generally it would be a good idea to go conservative for an interview and save the colors for after you get the job. Of course, if it's for an informal job where wearing a suit or something like that would make you come off as not fitting in, then go for something informal. I think the only time I dressed down for an interview was when I was told beforehand that I shouldn't dress up.

I'd error on the side of conservative and go with a suit, but I'd wear a sleeveless blouse under it - keep the jacket off for the commute (to not get super sweaty) and then put the jacket on before I go into the building.

Definitely wear a suit. Some people would consider it to be a major faux pas not to. Once you get the job, you can be less conservative. Agree about closed-toe shoes.

I once got passed over because I wore a pants suit. Not that I want to promote that sort of rationale, but I'd wear a skirt suit if you have one -- anything you can do in your favor is helpful.

PP - How do you know that's why you didn't get the job?

I'm curious as well...
And yes, I'd just go with a suit - and I've worn plenty of pant suits before and have not had a problem.

Agree with the suit although i think a nice fitting pant suit is fine and I work in a conservative place. Key for me is that it not have pulls, stains, worn sleeves, etc. Oh and no cleavage. I remember interviewing someone a few years ago and really wanted to like her but her attire was so sloppy (on more than one occasion) I couldn't get past it - largely because in my business we are interacting with clients and need to project a professional image.

I actually think pants suits are more professional than skirts - especially in summer. Hose is weird in summer, tights are out, and you probably don't want to go bare legged.

Former recruiter here. A pant suit is fine. Defintely dress more conservative and don't go crazy with jewelery. You want them to remember you, not your outfit. Other things that drove me crazy during an interivew where when the candidate wore too much perfume/cologne or would be chewing gum.

I just had an interview today and wore a suit (black, pretty formal), closed-toe shoes, and hose. Didn't feel out of place at all, even though it appeared that the dress code at the company is business casual. Good luck and congrats on your interview - hope you get the job!

Me too -- attorney who has worn a pant suits to every interview since law school and has never (knowingly) been passed over for this apparent faux pas. Still would wear only pant suits; they are way more comfortable than skirt suits, particularly for summer interviews (because you have to wear hose if you wear a skirt to an interview).

I'm the one who said I was passed over for a job because I wore a pants suit. It was about 10 or so years ago at a very large/well-known law firm in Louisville, KY. I was young and fairly broke and it was my 3rd and final interview -- I was out of skirt suits, so I wore a nice black pants suit for the third interview, which was before a panel of attorneys/partners. I was sent there by a recruiter. After the interview the recruiter called me and asked me why would I wear a pants suit to the interview? She then explained to me that I should never do that and that the senior partner at the firm told her that she wasn't interested in me and that she thought the pants suit was inappropriate. I was, of course, outraged. Even more so by the fact that that partner was a woman. At first I thought I'd wear what I damn well pleased on interviews and screw her! But the more I thought about it, I came to the conclusion that if wearing a skirt instead of pants would land me a job, it was a small concession. Once I landed the job, I'd wear pants every freaking day!
