Girl name that means strong or resilient or determined?

Anonymous
I am 37 weeks pregnant with a baby who is coming into being despite a lot of obstacles. She's the result of many, many IVF attempts, and the beginning of this pregnancy was super rocky. At one point, doctors told me there was an 85% chance i would miscarry. But at every scan, the baby looked strong and perfect and healthy.

I am considering picking a middle name that means strong or resilient or determined or some other positive quality that applies in this situation. It might be nice for her "naming story" to include a positive character trait like that.

What girl names can you think of that fit the bill?

My son was born in similar circumstances, and I named him Nicholas, which means "victory". Girls versions would be Nicole, Nicola, Nicolette etc . . . Victoria would also be lovely.

You could also choose a name that you associate with a strong, determined, woman from history. Some that come to my mind

Harriett (Tubman)

Ruth (Bader Ginsburg)

Esther (Biblical)

but of course there are many more.

Oh, that's an interesting idea -- to pick a name that reminds me of a strong woman. I like that. I will try to come up with a list. If anyone has suggestions in that vane, I'm interested in those too.

Civil rights leaders would be especially good -- like Harriet or Rosa.

One of my favorite civil rights leaders is Fannie Lou Hamer. I just can't love the name Fannie, but I could see using "Lou" as a middle name in her honor. I actually know a little Ana Lu, (short for Ana Lucia) which I think is an adorable double barreled name, so I could imagine Anna Lou, for example.

I also like the idea of giving her a name that means "hope." Hope is a little too literal for my taste, but maybe something like Nadine.

Thanks for these ideas, PPs!

Give her a name that means "warrior." I am partial to any of the Louisa/Luisa variants or Maud/Mathilda/Tilda.

I'm in a similar boat as you. We've decided on Beatrix, which means 'one who brings joy' or alternatively, 'joyful traveler'. There are a lot of variants on the spelling to use actually. Both of which really resonate with us, and also helps that it goes with a difficult to pair with last name. My grandmother's name was Victoria, which I would have strongly considered if I didn't have a lovely cousin already with the name. Best of luck to you

I like Helen or Nell. Both strong.

This is OP. I love Helen, but I think it means bright shining light, or something similar. Or are you thinking of an historical figure? Helen Keller? Helen of Troy (not admirable)?

Look up the name lists on nameberry

I had a baby that was a struggle after years of secondary infertility. I looked for names meaning luck/good fortune. Didn't wind up using one, but I liked the names felice or clover as middle names.

I was set to use Elaine as a middle name (a variant of Helen), but we didn't use our first choice first name because it didn't fit my child.

Elizabeth (for Elizabeth I)

Grace or Grainne (Grahn-ya) for Grace O'Malley (aka Grainne Ni Mhaol), a leader of the Irish rebellion against Elizabeth I

Julian or Julia for Julian of Norwich. She lost her whole family to the plague and became an important English religious writer and mystic. She was a radical optimist who believed that God was Mother as well as Father, and that God forgives all sin.

“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.” - Julian of Norwich
