Is OMG or Oh My God considered swearing (or cursing)?

I cringe when I hear or read “ oh my God.”

Learn something new every day. My kids have said “Jesus Christ” or “omygod!” Since they could talk. They say it if something surprises them-learned it from our families I guess. It never occurred to me someone would care/be offended/judge. They don’t swear and I wouldn’t like that. Never occurred to me this is a thing. Never went to church to learn any of this.

Hell no.

Yes, it's taking the Lord's name in vain and is low class. It's not allowed in my home. Why not just say Oh My Gosh!

I always find it mildly surprising how puritanical people still are in this day and age. I hope that the trend towards agnosticism accelerates so that my children’s children don’t have to deal with all the petty nonsense.

I agree with this except I am a little offend by Oh my God. To me it's a 10 commandment thing. I never say anything when I hear though because I know most people aren't offended by it and also there have been times I tried to say Oh my gosh and it came out sounding like God when I didn't mean for it to. (Once some churchy mcchurchy lady called me on it and I was really embarrassed because that wasn't what I meant to say, it just came out sounding wrong and she wasn't listening well. I was about 9 or so and at a friend's church.) But anything related to Jesus Christ is just about the most offensive thing I can hear used as a swear or pseudo swear phrase. I'd rather hear almost anything else. I might still think you're lacking a decent vocabulary but I'll feel sorry for you vs. completely losing respect for you.

Hello, pot . . . this is kettle . . .

No. I’m a pretty devout Catholic, but I don’t consider it swearing. I do cringe when I hear people use “Jesus Christ” or “Oh, my f——king God!”. I don’t say anything though. I’ve learned from this site that almost no one cares if they offend you and if you speak up, it just increases the behavior from the more obnoxious people.

When I say—oh my god—I’m referring to Zeus, so none of you Baptist fundies need to get upset.

Not in any home I want to live in ... amongst yourselves if this matters, fine.

As to others, get over it.
