Is OMG or Oh My God considered swearing (or cursing)?

Just curious.

Not by me, but I'm an atheist.

I have been asking my 7-year-old daughter to say "Oh my gosh" instead, though. Sounds better coming from a 7-year-old.

I teach my children not to take the Lord's name in vain. It is wrong to say God's name when not in prayer, or irreverently.

But several priests have told me that having a potty mouth, while vulgar, is not sinful. In order for cursing to rise to the level of a sin, it must be meant as a curse.

Friends who lived in Europe have told me that priests from some countries swear terribly, but not sinfully

It is considered impolite because to some people, it is taking the lord's name in vain (not to me, BTW).

I teach my kids to say O my Gosh and ask their teachers to, as well, when necessary.

Oh my god... NO!

I grew up as a preacher's kid, and we were taught that saying this is taking the Lord's name in vain. Can't remember what Commandment it is. Some little kid at the school where my mom taught said, "you always say the name of God with love and respect."

I try to say OMgosh around people I know would be offended, but otherwise whatever comes out is what it is.

We call it cussing. As an agnostic I don't think of it as cussing but when it comes out of my childrens' mouths - I don't like it - so I'm trying to stop.

I don't like it. It sounds disrespectful. I wouldn't say "Oh my Muhammad" or "Oh my Buddah" either. Crikey, Tartar Sauce, or Barnacles are a much better alternative.

I don't like it, either. But I wouldn't call it swearing.

Barnacles! Love it.

I agree, as a completely non-religeous person, that it can be offensive unless you really know your audience. And, as a non-religeous person, even I cringe a little at it.

I find nothing wrong with "Oh my gosh" or OMG (because the "G" could be gosh).

I don't like it and I don't use it but I am not really offended by it. What I do find offensive is when people use Jesus Christ or Jesus F'ing Christ as swear / curse words.

Oops. Sorry about that other thread.

Extreme liberal here, and for some strange reason, I always ask my kids to say 'oh my goodness or gracious or whatever'. I cannot say why but a child saying 'oh my God' seems, well, irreverant to me. I'm a coasting Jew (proud of my heritage but willing to violate shellfish laws in the selfish search for the ultimate eating experience) but we don't even print the word God. It is always printed G-d. Maybe that's my dysfunction. It also seems disrespectful to all other religions that have a diety. Kind of like buying a cake that says 9/11 on it. It cheapens something. What it cheapens I'm still not sure of.
