+1 In 2007 a bridge in Minnesota shockingly fell into the Mississippi River, and not because a 984-foot ship from Singapore had a power failure and bumped into that bridge WHICH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHO VIEWS IT AS A THRIVING CITY NECESSARILY, but because the lack of attention to infrastructure in America let it molder. This disaster killed 13 people and injured 140 more. TWO DAYS LATER the U.S. House of Representatives voted unanimously to provide $250M of federal funds to replace the bridge and the Senate then confirmed it using only a voice vote. Curious to see what happens later this week in 2024, considering the House of Representatives a) has zero interest in governing; b) has even less interest in solving America’s problems; c) is on vacation for at least ten more days; d) has trouble gathering a quorum without concern about Hunter Biden; and e) has a majority who worships a cult leader who WHILE PRESIDENT of Baltimore and the rest of America called the city of Baltimore a “rodent infested mess.”

I do however share your hope for federal funding and significant benefits.

There are several right wingers, including from Minnesota, who are criticizing Biden for offering Federal aid with this.

These "right wingers" see the stupidity of Biden's quote considering that the ship's insurance provider should be 1st on the hook to pay as Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen also recognized.

I guess you all are too dim to understand that the federal government will financially back the reconstruction of the bridge while the insurance gets settled out. I didn't see the Congress or the Minnesota delegation complaining about a similar action when the bridge over the Mississippi River collapsed several years ago.

+1000. If we waited for the insurance to be settled it might be a year or more before any work would even start. Biden is starting immediately, with federal funds, which he intends to recover from the responsible parties or covering insurers.

Its not about waiting for insurance dim one.
Its about Biden proclaiming that the government will pick up 100% of the cost.
Stop trying to defend or deflect what he stupidly said.

BOTH can be true, fool.

He is saying the government will pay to get the work done. NOWHERE in that does it say they are letting the responsible parties off the hook and won't go after them for cost recovery. And in fact his administration is already on the job investigating and building the case.

Government CAN pay 100% of the cost but then RECOVER part of it from those parties. Or do you not understand the concept of cost recovery?

Biden said nothing about cost recovery. Nothing! Fool.

OMG, sorry if he didn’t spell it out for ppl like you.

It will. The purple line is mostly about helping people. The bridge is more about helping commerce. The bridge might even get rebuilt before the Purple line opens.

You’d win that bet! The purple line construction seems like slow motion.

What are the options for these jobs and maybe even the port traffic to come back to a rebuilt port?

Of course it will be ok. Baltimore did not just start as a port. There is a reason why it was large. Everything will be fine.

There will be little cost recovery here. And the little that comes will take years.

That bridge will cost 5 billion to rebuild. Just the clean up of the old bridge will cost close a billion by the time it is done. No way the boat has that kind of insurance. And the ownership and operation of the boat are structured to limit any recovery. At best they will get a recovery that is chewed up by clean up and payments to the port for various things. Maybe some portion of the design costs. That is it. And even that will take 10 years of litigation. This is not bp in the gulf with almost unlimited resources.

This bridge does not get rebuilt unless federal government pays for it up front. Minor recovery to follow.

By the way, very unclear who has responsibility for this under us maritime law.

Short answer, OP, is yes. Of course it will recover.
Anonymous
It was due for replacement anyway, and you wouldn't get a discount for the existing bridge when you rebuilt it. The insurance only needs to cover the demolition of the existing bridge and payouts to the families.

Ship owner just filed limitation of liability action in federal court to cap damages at 43 million. Under maritime law this will be approved. No way out of it. Other people to go after but the ship owners are not one of them.

DP... OMG you are a simplistic idiot. Anyone with a clue knows that it will likely take YEARS to get through litigation and to get payment. Biden knows this too, and he knows recovery and rebuilding needs to start NOW rather than years from now when we get the money. You seem to be the only person here who DOESN'T have a clue.

You have to be the most obtuse person on DCUM if you seriously think "uhh Biden says the taxpayers are footing the bill and that's that, end of story, the company that trashed the bridge is getting off scot free"

Their insurers will end up getting stuck for a chunk of it.

No. This would include the insurance. Entire recovery. They may have to prove that it was not their fault to get the limitation. Not sure.

That maritime law only shields them against economic damages claims. It does not shield them against injuries, death and property damage or losses, such as claims from the people harmed by the collapse or claims over the damage to the bridge itself. And those property damage/loss claims will be in the billions.

Ummm yes it does shield them from everything if they can win. People harmed by bridge are people that fell in. Any other people it is far too remote.
