| My DD is 12 years old and the dostor said she will get her period in 3-6 months, both my husband and I are tall but DD is not on the taller side, wanted to ask others experience if their DD gained height before or after their period. Thanks in advance |
| I got my period when I was in 5th grade so 10-11 years old. I didn't grow any more after that. So I reached my full height when I got my period. I believe boys and girls have different growth responses from puberty. My college roommate got her first period at age 18 she was very tall and was growing up until she got her period. Antidotal (sp?) perhaps but worth asking her doctor. |
I guess I'm old and since I don't have any daughters I'm curious how they can determine when a girl will get her period? Is there some special blood test now? I would have loved to have gotten a heads up when I was a girl! I got my period when I was 11, I did not grow after that. |
| I got mine right before I turned 12, and I don't think I grew much after that either. Maybe 1/2 an inch? I was 5'7" in the 6th grade and AWKWARD as hell. My best friend didn't get her until 16 and she was always TINY TINY until the year before her period when she sprouted up. |
| Maybe .5 inch. |
| I got my period when I was 11. I grew 2 inches between 11 and 13, then 2 more during my freshman year of high school. So, I am 4 inches taller than i was when I got my period. I have read that growth generally stops two years after the period starts, but kids vary, |

"Growth in height is most rapid during several years prior to menarche, with onset of the growth spurt occurring between the ages of 10 - 14 years. Peak height velocity occurs about one to one and a half years before menarche. Additional height is gained after peak height velocity (10.8 - 22.3 cm) and after menarche (7.4 - 10.6 cm). This additional height may be gained over a period of 4.7 years after menarche (Tanner, 1972). Growth of the pelvic bones, critical for preventing obstructed labour, occurs for several more years after height is complete (Moerman, 1982)."

| I gained 3.5 inches after I got my period. |
| My daughter grew about an inch, from not quite 5'5" to not quite 5'6". |
| I really don't know how Dr can tell, he can speculate, not tell for sure. My DD got it before she had much of any other development, and she grew since half an inch. So not much at all. |

Elsewhere on this board it has been reported that 0-2 inches after period is more typical than the stats reported above. My DD is 13 next month and is shooting past her friends that developed earlier at this point.
Also, note that I am not real confident in the doc's predictions about when the period will arrive. So she may grow 5 inches between now and its arrival as the fastest growth happens in the year and a half prior to menarch. My DH and I are tall at her last appointment the doctor thought she was "a year or so away" because she grew 4 inches last year. When I pointed out that she grew consistently 3 inches every other year and I had delayed this appointment by at least 2 months they backed off that promise a bit. They were using what they saw as a pre-menstrual growth spurt as a sign that her period would start soon. But to me the 4 inches may have just been the beginning of the spurt or pretty typical growth. |
| I didn't grow after I got my period. I thought that was normal? |
| I got my period at 13, and grew another 1.5 inches. |
| Note that feet and hands stop growing first. So if she's still outgrowing shoes, you may have a while yet. |
It is normal. It also normal to keep growing. OP, what happened with other women in your family and your husband's family are probably the best estimates of what will happen with your daughter. My brothers got their growth spurts early and then were done by 16. I am guessing that my sons will be the same way, since DS#1 is hitting his growth spurt early. Some of my male friends from college weren't done growing until 22 or so, though. It just depends on your genetics. |
