Presumably more than there was under segregation and jim crow. The SBA wasn't founded until 1953. They would have to self fund, like people did before the government gave help. |
Seems as if anyone who does not support reparations is racist around here.
I don't support reparations. I guess I am racist. I guess Barack Obama is racist too. |
I'm not Jewish? You don't know a damn thing about me and I don't know anything about you, so feel free to make up what ever reality you like. It's a lot easier to make up reasons to dismiss people than it is to actually engage them. Knock yourself out. Wikipedia was my source for 3,000 jews in Georgia and half fled. Which is "thousands," as I understand it, but that really isn't the point. Tried to confirm, but could not do that on my phone. Myjewishlearning.com said people left without giving a number. Not the "suffering Olympics?" That's exactly what it is. If people who share your skin color suffered enough in the past you win "reparations," and other who suffered in other ways in other places don't. Unless they can make an equal or better case, I guess, but most can't. |
Isn't it fun to come on anonymous message boards and just start firing off names at people you have no idea who they are??
Apparently, the only reason one can disagree with reparations is that they are racists. If it was only that easy, but go on, fire away. Always helps to advance the conversation. |
Oh honey. Did your feelings get hurt? I’m so sorry. But no one called you a racist for not supporting reparations - they called you a racist for the REASONS why you don’t support it. Need a tissue? |
Timestamp of anyone who was called a racist for not supporting reparations and not for some other reason? |
Ok. Enough to help with the gap? |
Great question. A congressional study would be the best approach to defining criteria and programs, but here is what I’d like to see done: First, the US should issue an apology that recognizes the impact of white supremacy in US policies over the last 400 years. Also, update k-12 curriculum to more accurately reflect black history in the US and incorporate programs to reduce implicit bias. Then, to “atone” for the atrocities, the US government should create a portfolio of investments into black communities (programs to increase homeownership, education, and wealth). The actual impact of white supremacy was trillions of dollars (various estimates range from $2T to $100T+). I’d like to see that paid out over time. $300B per year over the next 20 years (re-evaluate every 5 years): - $25B for predominantly black PK-12 districts (that is the current gap in spending) - $10B for training programs - $10B for community college & HBCU - $5B for high-quality childcare for those in training/school - $75B for business loans/grants - $75B for homeownership programs, prioritizing people who live in redlined neighborhoods (equity grants to reduce gap in homeownership - 43% vs 73%) - $80B for personal investments or opportunity accounts - $2k pp per year (median white family has 86x assets as median black) - $20B for rehabilitation programs for inmates ~40 million Americans would be eligible if criteria is having one enslaved ancestor and identifying as black for the last 10 years. That still doesn’t cover the current wealth gap of $267k pp, but it’s a great start towards recovery. No, I'm good. Thanks. I just know it's projection. And, the way some people here try to shut down discussion when they disagree with the argument. So. I am not offended nor am I afraid to continue to express my opinion. |
there are going to be a lot of Rachel Dolezals out there in the next year if this ever is even considered. |
Timestamp of post that you believe was an attempt to shut you down? |
Thanks, I am the PP who calls himself a racist above I actually support most of that program. My three objections are: 1) I don't think the financial cost of white supremacism can actually be calculated, so I don't think it can be used as a guide for what to pay now. 2) I support similiar investments in poor Latino and white communities. 3) I support universal or near universal basic income in higher amounts than the $2K you propose. But I'm still going to have consider myself racist because I am including other races in your great investment program that will help a lot of black people. Also, I like the official apology thing, and I'll go one better. I thing we need a truth and reconciliation commission like South Africa bad. Let's put all the history out there for all of us to discuss. History is important. I just don't think it can be paid for. |
Agree. |
I don't support reparations because I don't believe anyone is entitled to personal cash payment for anything that happened to any group in any previous generation, no matter how horrible. I do believe that poor people should be given assistance to earn money, buy homes, build businesses etc. I also believe that systemic racism is a problem and that all forms of systemic racism should be dismantled today but I don't consider this a reparation because it doesn't make up for anything that happened in a previous generation. I called myself a racist for taking this position. Do you I think I am? |
Not a reply to me, but to another "racist" poster. 06/27/2020 22:25 |
