Consolidated FCPS SAT Three-Year Averages Thread (All, White. Asian, Black, Hispanic Students)

There was a thread a while back where a poster talked about picking West Springfield as an option for her AA kid(s). It made me wonder whether West Springfield really had the best test scores for AA students, or whether it was the combination of having good scores and enough black students to start to mitigate the risk of being the only AA student in a class in the West Springfield pyramid. So I started pulling some numbers together for SAT averages for seniors at the schools over the past three years, both overall and for different groups (white, Asian, black, Hispanic). Some of this has been included in other threads, but here's all the information in one place.

Some take-aways: (1) TJ is in a class by itself (duh); (2) one distinguishing characteristic of the five neighborhood schools with the highest overall scores (Langley, McLean, Woodson, Oakton, Madison) is that students in every group have comparatively high scores; (3) in numerous cases, white students at schools with relatively few white students do just as well if not better than white students at schools with more white students; (4) the nine high schools with the highest scoring Asian students are all AP schools; (4) the seven high schools with the highest scoring Black students all have 5.0% or lower AA enrollments as of September 2015, creating a potential dilemma for AA parents who want to send their kids to both top-performing schools and schools with significant numbers of AA students; (5) apart from Langley and TJ, every high school in FCPS is at least 10% Hispanic now; and (6) excluding TJ, the spread between the schools with the highest and lowest scores for white students (176 points) is considerably lower than the spread between the schools with the highest and lowest scores for Asian students (462 points), Black students (325 points) and Hispanic students (405).

^One correction: the spread between the FCPS schools with the highest and lowest scores for white students is 276 points, not 176 - still a lower spread than the spreads for the highest and lowest scores at schools for other racial/ethnic groups.

And, if you compare the FCPS information to the three main high schools in Arlington, what really stands out is the strong performance of white students and comparatively poor performance of minority students.

So Arlington only does well by white kids? No surprise. Very few of the smart Asians live there.
