Poll: What kind of childcare arrangements are you making and what do you expect to pay?

Anonymous
DH and I are planning to do a nanny share, so unfortunately we can't nail down plans too far in advance. I've heard such widely varying numbers ($1100-2500/mo) that I'm curious to see some real data. Does anyone already know what they will be paying or experienced moms want to share what they were paying per month in the first year?

What area are you in?

I've used a few different options, all full time -

Licensed in-home daycare: $275-350/week
Daycare center: $1400-2200/month
Au pair: $400/week, inclusive of most ad-ons
Nanny: $12-20/hr, avg in this area is $15/hr base

I paid $2k/month for infant day care until we just recently got a price break at 2 yo. This is in Falls Church City.

Nanny shares will cost you about $10/hr (each family) plus FICA or whatever payroll taxes you need to add (not sure). The nanny forum will give you a better picture. When I looked at it 2 years ago it was a little more expensive per month than my day care.

OP here, I'm in Petworth.

For DC I'd say your rate for in-home is pretty low. Most have upped to be closer to facility charge. I called around 10 and the cheapest I found was $335/week. I'd say it's closer to $335-400/week.

My experience in DC nanny share is from $450-$600/week after all taxes.

Au pair is more like $350/week unless yours is eating like a farmhand!

We've had au pairs for 4 years and it is absolutely the best fit for our family. It's not for everyone, though. The flexibility is what makes it a winner for me (I WAH fulltime and sometimes need help in the evenings here and there).

How far in advance do you have to start an AP search?

We pay in home licensed daycare $250 per week for an infant. We're in NOVA and she's giving us a little break on her usual rate since I'm a student.

Wow, that is really low. For some reason, I thought it was a lot more.

You really want a young girl taking care of your baby?

Didn't say I did, just saying its lower than expected. Btw, my friend's Au pair was 24 with almost 10,000 hours experience. Far more than the average hourly worker at a facility.

Just watched Hand That Rocks The Cradle. That plus reading these crazy expensive rates makes me so, so thankful to have a really awesome and laidback live-in grandma who will take care of baby for free.

Just figured out a situation for my infant in Alexandria. Was doing to do a nanny share at ~2100 a month but got into a really nice daycare closer to my house for ~1800 a month.

Was offered a spot at another daycare for about 1350 but the difference was huge, TONS of kids, less adults, less structured play. I feel like we just rented DD a nice apartment but it really seemed in my research that you get what you pay for in the childcare arena.
