Was this racist? I need a reality check.

This weekend at a get together the subject of government assistance came up and I made the statement that I thought the entire system should be scrapped and a better more cohesive one put in place. I feel like people aren't getting the hand up that they need and that should be the focus, to get the support they need until they can stand on their own. I feel like if all assistance went through one agency we could better provide for each specific case and maybe weed out fraud (there will always be some fraud I am sure). I feel like the system is overwhelmed and overburdened and one of the reasons is its just so large and spread out. Some people who might not even know all the help that is available to them. A central agency could even collect data on charitable organizations for easy access to those who needs match the service.
Anyway, for this I was called a racist. Straight up to my face, "Wow, that is racist, I wouldn't expect that from you" then a lecture about my white privileged and not "grasping the concept". I rarely curse but WTF just keeps going through my mind. Seriously was that racist? Wanting people who are in need be able to get better assistance and easier access? |

The OP didn't state how much fraud s/he thinks there is. So how would you know? Also fraud in medicaid and medicare is HUGE. I mean f the OP for wanting to see that money go to people who actually need it. And it wasn't remotely racist OP but thats kind of how it goes now a days right? Arguments can be won and/or shut down with the cry of "privilege" now. |

Okay, OP here. To be fair there is a great deal of fraud in the system, especially medicaid/medicare as a pp said. I would rather see the funds/aid given to someone who needs it. Maybe that makes me uncool. |

OP here. I am curious what was out of line about it. Fixing a system and making it easier to access and aid those who need it can't be a bad thing. |

Uh... what was I wanting? I thought I was clear. I want a better system that aids more people and makes it easier to access. With better information about all that is available to assist someone. Instead of bureaucracy on top of bureaucracy I feel a more streamlined system would benefit people better. |

OP you are not allowed to say things like "welfare needs to be overhauled, its an outdated system that should better help people".

Where did I say a lot of people were cheating the system? Where did you get that assumption from? I said it might cut down on some fraud. Out of all I said about it, you are stuck on that? I am far more concerned with someone not knowing where to go for help, all the help that is available or knowing how and where to access charitable help outside and along with government assistance. I also think other frivolous government spending should be funneled towards helping the homeless. I have worked with nonprofits and shelters dedicated to this since I was a teen and not enough is being done. No real help is out there to remedy the real problem a person who is homeless faces. |

Disability fraud is in the billions, shame on OP for wanting that money to go to maybe the food stamp program or housing. 
No wonder more compassionate people don't speak up. |
